Update from the Transportation Department (Sept. 2016)

Update from the Transportation Department
Posted on 09/06/2016
Welcome back to school!

During the first few weeks of the school year, bus schedules can be puzzling and difficult to predict, as new traffic conditions emerge due to construction that took place over the summer. It takes time to determine whether delays will be permanent or will lessen once students, families, schools, and drivers are used to their new routines.

We do our best to schedule our bus routes, but we also want you to know that we monitor bus performance and adjust routes and schedules when needed. We will notify families if their child's bus stop time changes -- and in the meantime, we apologize for any confusion that may be caused as we struggle to respond to questions and concerns coming into our small office.

The transportation office strives to communicate effectively with families during this time, but we ask for your patience if you have difficulty getting through to reach a staff member. During the next several days, please expect that the @cps_buses Twitter may not be able to keep up with the high volume of bus delays. We will do our best to respond to questions that come in, but we expect that bus schedules will not be reliable until next week at the earliest.

Please note that we are also in the process of implementing a new GPS-based system, which will allow parents/guardians to monitor bus arrival times via their computer or mobile device. We look forward to expanding the pilot for this system. Until that time, we ask for your patience as we do our best to respond to questions and keep the system running safely.

We will keep you posted on the status of the new system. In the meantime, thank you for your patience and understanding during the busy opening days of the new school year.
