What would you do if there were enough hours in the day?

As part of our ongoing efforts to learn and improve as a school district, Cambridge Public Schools has identified a frequently-cited obstacle: time.

Our CPS District Plan highlights a number of initiatives and promising approaches that require an investment of time: time for training and professional development, time for educator collaboration, more time with students, and time for families and educators to partner together.

On May 1, a report on instruction and professional time was presented by the Cambridge Education Association (our local teacher professional and labor organization), in collaboration with CPS Central Administration. Following a seven-month process of consultation with educators and administrators and review of national research, the report recommended that Cambridge consider a expanding the length of the school day.

Of course, it’s not the number of hours in the day, it’s what we put into the hours that matters. So, CPS will be building on this work by conducting listening sessions and focus groups throughout our community.

Starting with individual school-based sessions this spring, the process will broaden to include public sessions and focus groups throughout the summer and fall of 2018. This inclusive process will include collaboration with our valued partners and focused sessions with families of students with specific learning needs including students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

Following are a list of School Council meetings that are on our schedule. If you are unable to attend, please share your thoughts via email.
