Cambridge educators get schooled on equity during eye-opening colloquium

Last week, every public school teacher in Cambridge got a strong rallying call from the district during a full-day colloquium focused almost entirely on equity.

This year marked a turning point for Cambridge Public Schools, thanks in part to a push from students of color and their allies who called out teachers and administrators for microaggressions they said were regularly made against them.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ken Salim, who is now in his third year, has made equity a cornerstone movement in his tenure, which he hopes to back up not just in conversation but in action. So this year he brought in Dr. Tyrone Howard, a professor and associate dean for equity, diversity and inclusion at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, to give the colloquium’s keynote address in the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School gym in front of approximately 1,300 CPS employees.
