Movement Across the DistrictThis is the 5th year that Cambridge Public School staff have been learning and teaching each other how to do yoga movement breaks in the classroom. These staff lead movement and breathing activities that can be done standing by a desk or sitting in a chair. Some activities are calming and some are energizing. The yoga movement breaks promote social, emotional and physical health and wellness, learning readiness and a positive school and classroom climate for students and teachers. One teacher commented, “Students loved the quiet of the chime listening as well as sharing their thoughts with others.” Another stated, “My students felt energized and ready to move on”.

The professional development class is structured in 2 parts: in the first hour, teachers experience the yoga movements in their own class. In the second hour, the instructor teaches staff how to lead yoga movement breaks with students, making connections between the teachers' experiences and the positive impact the movement breaks can bring to the classroom. Our instructors this year include Leslie Nilsen, Deirdre McCarthy, Jessica Della Calce, Chris Colbath-Hess and Kim DeAndrade.

Many Occupational and Physical Therapists in the district have been trained to teach teachers how to use the Yoga 4 Classrooms card deck. They have been in classrooms leading groups and offering movement break suggestions. Some PT's and OT's have offered the Yoga Movement Breaks course to staff in their assigned buildings as a 10-hour PD, hoping to spread its success and increase its use district wide.
