Elementary Health Education Program Teaches Kindness and Empathy
Posted on 11/16/2018
This is the second year of the new elementary health education program in the Cambridge Public Schools. Teachers Meghan Hallihan and Phil Fousek visit all 2nd & 3rd grade classes once a week for half the year. Topics taught so far include: celebrating diversity, friendship, communication skills, conflict resolution, and bullying.

Recently, they taught lessons on kindness and empathy. After reading a book called Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed, 2nd and 3rd grade scholars discussed how kindness can be contagious as it spreads from person to person. This led to a conversation about the different ways people can spread kindness to one another. Scholars came up with many thoughtful ideas, such as making someone a card, smiling at a stranger, and even sharing your pizza with a friend! Scholars wrote their idea for a way to spread kindness on a post-it note, and added it to a poster titled Throw Around Kindness Like Confetti. These posters are now hanging in the hallway of each elementary school as a reminder to the whole school that it is important to be kind!
