Dear Families,

I hope that you are able to enjoy the beautiful fall weather this month. I grew up in Florida, but since living up for here for a number of years I have found that the best part of living in New England is enjoying the seasons. Our teachers are also moving through units and further into new content and challenges. This is the time when students may need additional supports, careful monitoring, and a positive growth mindset. Students should also be reading and using their reading logs to track their progress. This is a great time to acquire new knowledge and skills.

As our students are constantly going outside for recess, the garden, or for Explorations, please make sure all of their jackets and clothing are labeled. Also, please make sure that your child is prepared for the flu and cold season as viruses can quickly spread. Hand washing is the best defense against the cold and flu. Nurse Rollins is available to answer questions and provide resources.

Thank you again for your support and teamwork.

Yours truly,

Gerald Yung

Library News

Monica Wellington Visit
Many thanks to the King Parent Group who treated King Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten students to a special visit from author/illustrator Monica Wellington on October 5. Ms. Wellington shared stories of how she found her calling as a young child and showed students her process for developing ideas for new books. Ms. Wellington also shared a few pages from her new book My Leaf Book as well as an app featuring her book Crepes Suzette.

Maris Wicks Visit
King 4th graders had an opportunity to meet author/illustrator Maris Wicks at the Cambridge Public Library on October 7 (see photo above). Ms. Wicks has just published a widely praised nonfiction graphic novel Human Body Theater, which features a musical revue starring all the biological systems of the human body.

Want to Help Out in Your Child's Classroom?

Then talk with your child's teacher about becoming a room parent! Room parents typically help the teacher's organize classroom breakfasts and other gatherings, collect contact information from parents, help on field trips, hang art work or put together classroom "published" materials, organize collections for teacher gifts. Each teacher and grade level is different and the jobs will vary. Being a classroom parent can be a rewarding and low key way to participate at school.
