Virtual Author Visit Jarrett Krosoczka
Librarian Jen and the 3rd grade students and teachers Skyped with a real-live superhero - Jarrett Krosoczka! A Worcester native, he writes and illustrates hilarious picture books, novels, and comic/graphic novels. During our September library visits, we learned about his writing and drawing process. Our Skype visit was 30 minutes and students saw his studio, asked great questions, watched him draw, and met his two pugs. We can’t wait to Skype with more authors!
In the Spotlight: King Open ROARS
While Room 110 has launched the school year, students have brainstormed specific ways they can "ROAR" in their community. Each week students reflected on a part of ROAR: be Respectful and kind, be Open, be an Active learner, and be Responsible. The hands are designed and decorated by the students and represent our community. The petals relate to our growth and current study of plants in Science.
1st and 2nd Curriculum Night
The 1st and 2nd grade Curriculum Night was Thursday, October 1st. Families were invited to attend with children. A series of tables were set up in the cafeteria to display activities from the various curriculum areas (social studies, science, math and literacy) and from the school community (Community
Schools an Family Liaison). Parents were encouraged to engage in these activities with their children. These activities gave a flavor of what children will be doing during the school
day. A detailed curriculum write up will be sent home soon that gives an overview of the topics to be explored in each curriculum area this year.
5th Grade Curriculum Night
The 5th grade teaching team (comprised of Ana Travassos, Aisha Vasquez Jackson, and Casey Cross Sussman) hosted a Curriculum Night last Wednesday, September 30, 2015. The goal of the event was for the teachers to meet the families of their students, give a curricular overview of the year, and share out the dynamics of the grade 5 community. The teachers explained each subject (e.g., Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies, and Specials) by topic and unit. This provided families with a framework for their children's studies and a chance to ask any questions. Each time teachers have a chance to get to know the families of their students better, the strength of the community grows. Therefore, the Fifth Grade team felt that
Curriculum Night 2015 was a success.
Bullying Workshops
During the first six weeks of school the third through fifth grade have participated in anti-bullying workshops that focus on bystander intervention and peer agency in combating bullying behavior and culminated in the creation of anti-bullying posters
with positive messages that will be hung throughout the school. In the coming weeks the older grades will be involved in holding discussions with grade K through two on similar themes by presenting their posters and co-leading workshops with school staff.
Title 1 Program
The King Open School is officially at Title I School. Title I is the largest federally funded supplemental education program. It does not replace what the school does; instead, it gives schools and students additional resources and instruction.
