Chelsea Clinton Visits VLUS!
VLUS students were thrilled to welcome Ms. Chelsea Clinton to our school on October 21 to hear her talk about her new book "It's Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!" This visit was scheduled through the Superintendent's office and Dr. Carolyn Turk. VLUS students asked very thoughtful questions to Ms. Clinton, such as "What can we do to make a change right now?" and "What are your thoughts on why gender equality around the world is still so difficult to achieve?" Students and teachers worked hard in preparing for her visit by reading passages of her book and thoughtfully reflecting about the ways that the world needs young people to start making changes to our world right now. It was a great event. Thanks to Dr. Turk for making this wonderful opportunity happen.
Reminder: School Picture Day

Can You Help with a Research Study?
My name is Elyse Postlewaite and I am a graduate student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I am looking for parents and students to participate in a qualitative research study of the Montessori method in a public school. The study focuses on the upper elementary level, including 4th and 5th grade. The interview will take no longer than 30 minutes. The results will be shared informally with my class and professor. (If you would like to know the results of the study, please ask your office for a copy of the final paper around January). Participation is completely voluntary and all participants will be kept anonymous. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions. Thank you!
Call for Nominations to Tobin School Advisory Council
The Tobin School Advisory Council (SAC) is seeking six (6) parent representatives to be elected to the School Advisory Council. Ideally, we would like to have representatives from all areas of the school: Children’s House, Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary. You DO NOT have to be an elected representative to attend the SAC meetings, and we encourage everyone to attend as often as your schedules will permit. If you DO wish to nominate yourself for election, you are committing to attend all of the meetings. They are held at 8AM usually on the first Thursday of every month. The November meeting is currently scheduled for Thursday, November 12th. The meetings typically last for one hour. As an elected representative, you will be eligible to vote on matters related to the School Improvement Plan and the school budget. You will also be eligible to be selected as one of the two Tobin representatives to the Citywide School Advisory Group that meets with the Superintendent and his Cabinet and representatives from all of the other Cambridge public schools on a monthly basis in the evenings.
If you wish to nominate yourself, please submit your name, child(ren)'s grade(s), email, and phone number to your classroom teacher or to Mary Frawley, Family Liaison, by October 30.
Halloween
Please DO NOT have your children wear their Halloween costumes to school! Community Schools will be having a Halloween Party after school on October 30th. More info will follow.
