The Haggerty Chorus Hits the Road!
On Tuesday, December 22, Haggerty Chorus donned their orange shirts and took a walk to Star Market, where they serenaded the shoppers and a few dedicated family members with songs from the Peace Day concert. Everyone had a lot of fun and we'll go back in the spring.

FROM THE ELA COACH...
Let's Pump Up the Volume about Vocabulary as a New Year's Resolution!
This school year, the ELA Department (English Language Arts) has launched a micro-vocabulary curriculum. In order to help all students become more familiar with academic language, each grade will integrate 20-25 vocabulary words into our daily teaching and learning lives.  Many of these words are already a part of student conversations thanks to ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies units being taught each week.  These vocabulary words can be used in typical conversations; save the definitions, sentences and spelling for WORD Study...these words support our Listening and Speaking standards.

The intention of this curriculum is for students to recognize these words and to use them as part of their regular school conversations. Students should understand what they mean; and be able to use them in their own ways. If you’d like to support your child’s acquisition of these speaking vocabulary words, stay tuned...the grade level words will be posted on the Haggerty site soon. (Feel free to ask Mrs. Russell if you can’t wait till then!) Examples from Grade 3: Claim, contrast, distinguish, examine, identify, research.

Without the pressure of definitions or writing sentences, you can see how children might love to try out these ‘fancy’ new words. Join us in, 'Pumping up Vocabulary' in 2016.
