Fish Prints
Students in all five lower elementary classes have been studying the five classes of vertebrates this spring. As a culminating activity to their fish studies, students took part in a fun art and science project, creating fish print t-shirts! Thanks to the Fish Monger on Huron Ave. who generously donated five fresh flounder, students were able to get their hands on a real fish and investigate and identify the parts of the fish up close. Students each had a chance to apply paint to the fish and then print their t-shirt with the fish image. Once the paint was dry, some classes even labeled the parts of the fish right on their shirts! In an attempt to further link their classroom studies with what we do outside, one fish was then added to the CitySprouts garden for composting. Let's see how well that garden bed grows!

Tea Time
Room 283 had their Annual Tea Party just before vacation. All the children helped with the preparation for the big event. All the parents or special friends were escorted to their tables, and the children served them tea in fancy china cups! Everyone had a delightful time!

Family Feud!
On Monday afternoon, all the students in grades 3 through 5 who will be taking the PARCC test headed to the auditorium for a game of Family Feud. Their teachers were each part of a team. The Family Feud rules were applied, and the students as well as the staff had an amazing time! Of course, all the students were routing for their teachers to come up with the correct answer! It got a little loud in the auditorium! The assembly ended with a video about Derek Redmond (check it out on YouTube) the famous Olympian who in 1992 was favored to win the gold medal. Because of an injury that happened during the race, he didn't win the race...BUT he didn't give up and walked to the finish line. Just like our students...we never give up!

CitySprouts Update

Hello Tobin community,

I hope you are well and enjoying the warm weather. As usual, students are working and learning in our garden as it awakens:
–Brittany's students have buried their artistically decorated fish head in our garden bed, so that our corn will have plenty of nutrients to eat this summer.
–Mayya and KariAnne's students have watered our newly planted seedlings, so that they may grow big and strong this spring.
–Minda's students have explored the garden using their senses, smelling our crabapple blossoms and grape hyacinth and looking at our multi-color tulips.

Students will soon be measuring our pea plants, conducting a Bio Blitz inventory of all living things in our garden, adding beneficial nematodes to ward off pests, and observing animal adaptations with bird skulls.

My goal this season is to work with every class at Tobin at least once (hopefully more than once). I am working my way through each grade, but please feel free to reach out to me with any additional ideas or requests. Whether you would like to work with me or use the garden independently, I would be happy to help make that happen. Thanks and see you in the garden!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Do a deed of simple kindness; though its end you may not see, it may reach, like widening ripples, down a long eternity.
–Joseph Norris

LOST & FOUND / WINTER GEAR EXCHANGE
The winter gear exchange was a huge success this year, but now it is time to tidy it up. Please stop by and take what you think you may use for your family. At the end of next week, all items will be put out in the donation bin. Also, please ask your children to check the lost and found area for items they may have misplaced. That area will be cleaned out as well.
