Welcome Back!
Dear Baldwin Families,

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! This year the first day of school for Grades 1-5 is Tuesday, September 6, and the first day for Kindergarten (JK and K) is Thursday, September 8. Our new team of custodians have brought out the shine in the Baldwin like never before!

This year our staff will continue to work on developing engagement, growth mindsets, and agency in our students and with our families. I am looking forward to working with our teachers and our families to continue our work on “The Baldwin Way.” Read the summary of our work on this so far. We will be identifying more topics this year. Our Site Council continues to be a place where parent engagement both occurs and is a topic. I invite you to consider joining! Please contact Susan Tiersch, our Family Liaison if you are interested in participating. Our Site Council would be the venue for parents to be able to share their input in helping us identify “The Baldwin Way.”

Teachers and staff will continue to be a part of a Lesson Study Cycle, focusing on the concepts in The Skillful Teacher. We will continue to implement Student Led Parent Conferences in November/December and March/April.

This year we will also concentrate on the Social-Emotional development of our students in our professional work. We will be exploring what it means to be Peacemakers throughout the year, focusing on how we can support students in dealing with conflict and how to actively solve issues in ways that lead to long term, healthy outcomes for our students.

Our devoted Friends of Baldwin will be continue to develop strong ties between our parents and school and the outside community, this year we welcome Bob Neer and Andrew Jankowich as the new Co-Presidents. I’d like to thank Lianne Fisman and Melissa Maldonado so very much for their incredible leadership over the past two years. And I’d also like to again thank Jenny Monroe and her team for raising over $16,000 for our overnight trips through the Baldwin Blooms auction. The Baldwin staff has made overnight trips such a key part of the Baldwin experience for many years, and now we are developing a solid foundation to fund these expensive (but so worth it!) trips for every student every year in grades 2-5.

I’d like to welcome the following summer hires to our staff.

Speech and Language – Colleen Tracy joins us.

Music – Cassandra McDonald – will teach grades 3 and 4, and help Adam Epstein with Grade 2 chorus.

I am happy to announce that we were able to hire nine interns for this year, many from Wheelock.

  1. Amy Diaz, Nishat Khan, To be hired.
  2. Majenta Gafford, Andrea Licciardello, Leah Deveau
  3. Rachel Dunbar
  4. Samantha Stanley
  5. Alison Buthlay

On a personal note, I’d like to thank all the families who sent their best wishes and condolences after the loss of my father. Your support was truly felt and appreciated.

Enjoy the last moments of summer, and look forward to seeing you after Labor Day!
