Egg Drop!
Last week our students participated in their first STEM design challenge called "Will Humpty Go Splat or Will He Last?" Each group made a structure to help Humpty Dumpty's father not go splat when he was dropped from different heights. Students designed each structure differently with a variety of materials from family donations. Students will have another opportunity to evaluate and redesign their work as part of the Design Loop!

Here’s what you can expect to learn about at Back to School Night:
-Classroom routines & expectations “A day in the life at Tobin.”
-Information from specialists-Art, Music, Gym, Library, Technology
-Roles and responsibilities of Tobin Special Educators Interventionists & our School Adjustment Counselor
-Administrative goals and protocols for the 2016-2017 school year

*Please note: there is no childcare provided for this event. If you cannot make alternative arrangements for your children, we ask that your children (regardless of their age) remain with you at all times.

This is one of the most important events for parents/guardians to attend. As we say to your children, learning never ends – so even if you have been with us for years there is always something new to learn about Tobin. We look forward to seeing all of you.

Nature's Classroom
Last week many of the UE students went on our yearly overnight trip. This year we attended a program called Nature's Classroom in Yarmouthport. The program is a way to introduce/expose students to the natural environment in a fun, nurturing way. Students are involved in field groups, small groups of students led by a Nature's Classroom trained teacher. These field groups spend the day exploring the outdoors, and playing group games that encourage teamwork and cooperation. Students also have some free time to spend in their cabins or playing a variety of games around the site. In the evening the students are involved in whole group activities which include team building activities, and a night hike. The final activity of the evening is a sing-a-long. This trip is a great opportunity for our students to build the community of UE in the beginning of the year. The students look forward to this experience and talk about their adventures throughout the year. Next year we will go to Thompson's Island for our overnight adventure. Some students opt to stay back and have a 'field experience'. These students took a trip to the Museum of Science and explored the energy exhibits. They also took a trip to Lesley University and engaged in a variety of STEAM activities.

kindness

Kindness Jar
Following our assembly on Thinking About Ourselves and Others each classroom received a “Kindness Jar”. When students see someone being kind to another person, they will write what they see on a tag from the tray. If they need help recording what they saw, they will ask a friend or teacher. Students will then place their tag in the “Kindness Jar”. Tags will be hung on a “Kindness Tree” in the lobby for all to appreciate and be inspired by. If you would like to help cut out leaves for our tree, we welcome parent help on this task! It can be done at home! Please see Erin Gutierrez or email her at [email protected] for details.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
You are your own little light, shine bright so everyone can see.
–Elizabeth

DID YOU KNOW?
Parents are welcome to come to the library before and after school and during open library times to check out books. This is especially useful for Children’s House parents as the books your children checkout stay in school and become the rotating class library. Or maybe you want an audio book for the car, we have a small selection of books on CD. The same circulation rules apply, books are due back in two weeks (or renewed) and you do not have to be present to return them, just send them back with your child, the classroom teacher will make sure they are returned to the library. So if your child has been asking to bring books home, come on up!

If you want to bring your Coats For Kids donation at to the school, we will be happy to drop them off for you.

VISION SCREENING FOR CHILDREN'S HOUSE STUDENTS
The annual state-mandated vision screening for all M4 and M5 students will be next Thursday, October 6. Please check your child’s communication folder for the letter about the screening. No need to sign and return the letter unless you do not want your child to be screened. If you have any questions about the screening, please contact Mary-Margaret Segraves ([email protected] 617.349.6600 x295) or Ann O’Shea (617.655.3794).
