Kindergarten Curriculum Breakfast: October 7th
This is our first event of the year! Families come to this potluck breakfast to get to know each other, meet their child’s classmates, and spend some time in the classroom. Teachers may conduct a Morning Meeting to show a little bit of the routine and/or kids may do a short singing performance of songs they have been learning in the classroom.

Morning Meeting is critical as it is the anchor of the school day. It is guided by our Responsive Classroom approach to teaching at KO. During this 20-25 minutes, it is our intention to begin to meet 3 basic human needs: a sense of significance, a sense of belonging and a sense of fun. The presentation of songs also gives children a sense of pride in their work, and an opportunity for families to see their progress.

The final portion of the event is dedicated to parents/caregivers only. While children and assistants go out to recess, teachers will talk about the highlights of the Kindergarten curriculum, and answer any questions families may have about our King Open Kindergarten Program.

Note from the Library
A new year means new books! All King Open classes have begun library visits, and 1st- 5th have begun to check out books. Please help your child remember to bring books back to school on their library day so they can borrow new books each week.

If you are unsure of their day, you may ask their teacher or me. Kindergarten classes keep their library books in the classroom as a supplement to their classroom libraries. Families are welcome to set up "family cards" to check out extra books to bring home. Stay tuned for Family Library Friday, resuming in mid-October!

Note from Our Music Teacher
Welcome back to King Open! I'm very excited for a great musical year together! All students will be exploring Brazilian music and rhythms this year. I attended a Brazilian music camp in August and am very excited to share this awesome music and percussion.

The King Open Singers are a mixed age chorus this year and we are off to a spectacular start! Our membership is right around 50 students. We are practicing on Tuesday mornings from 8-8:40AM and on Friday mornings from 9:30-10:15AM. The Friday rehearsals will involve as many of the students as the teachers can allow, with all of the other commitments we all have. Our first performance will be at the Pizza e Basta in early November.

I'm sending out an email to all families very soon to make sure I have all of the email addresses correct. If for any reason I will not be in school on a Tuesday morning, I will send out an email to let you know, so as not to have you get to school early when chorus will not be held.

Please let me know if you ever have any questions, concerns, or contributions to the King Open music program.

Cheers, Ms. Kathleen Kolman ([email protected])

Club Z! Provides 1-on-1 Tutoring
Club Z! specializes in one-on-one tutoring in the student’s home in all subject levels (K thru 12), including ACT/SAT test prep and foreign languages. Our number one goal is to help nurture our students’ academic growth. Club Z’s qualified tutors work with, and supplement, the school curriculum. Club Z! tutors also introduce effective study skills, helping students to develop beneficial study habits.

Our approach to tutoring follows the following process:
–In-home consultation with the parents and the student to understand more about the student’s needs and how best to address them.
–A meeting with the student’s teacher in school to understand more about the student’s work in the classroom, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the school curriculum. As our program supports the school curriculum and instruction, communication with the teacher (with the parents’ consent) is very important for us to accomplish academic goals.
–Once we have taken these steps we assign a tutor who matches the student’s academic needs and learning style.
