Maris

5th Grade Project Kick-off with Author Maris Wicks
On October 18, graphic book writer Maris Wicks came to the library to visit our 5th graders. Maris is the author/illustrator of Human Body Theater: A Nonfiction Revue and she came dressed as the narrator - a skeleton! This year, students will work with Maris, classroom teachers, Jen the librarian, Ms. Rosenberg, the technology specialist and Kelley, the art teacher to create plays, videos, and animation. We are excited to integrate science, art, technology, and performance!

Sound of Silence

2nd Grade Author Visit with Katrina Goldsaito
On October 21, Katrina Goldsaito held writers’ workshops with every 2nd grade class! Students prepared for her visit in Library classes. Katrina’s critically acclaimed book The Sound of Silence is a story of mindfulness, listening, and gave us a glimpse of Tokyo. Katrina helped us create “onomatopoetry,” writing and drawing about sounds we love. See her examples online here. Her visit was made possible with funds from our Book Fair.

Apple Journal

1st and 2nd Graders Go Apple Picking!
On October 14, the 1st and 2nd grade classes went to Belkin Family Lookout Farm in Natick. The students enjoyed the petting zoo and every student came home with a bag of apples! Lukas in room 113 explained “(we) rode a truck train to the apple orchard...Our groups went apple picking in a bin. We got apples from a bin because of the drought.” Despite the drought, a good time was had by all!

Sick Day

Cambridge Public Health Flu Clinics:
Oct. 12–Nov. 9
Nasal spray vaccine will not be offered.

The Cambridge Public Health Department will be offering free flu shots (influenza vaccine) to people who live or work in Cambridge at sites throughout the city from Oct. 12 through Nov. 9.

The flu can be a serious illness, and the best way to protect yourself is to get a flu shot every year. Flu vaccine is considered safe and effective for adults and children over 6 months. While there is no charge to the public for flu shots, people with health insurance are encouraged to bring their cards with them to the clinics.
