Apple Cider

Delicious!
Thanks to CitySprouts and our garden coordinator Michelle Kaufman, many classrooms took part in a wonderful annual fall tradition of cider pressing. Kids learned all the steps of the process starting with washing the apples. Next cutting and mashing, and finally pressing. Every student takes a turn. The result... delicious!

Thank you to the parents who volunteered to help with cider pressing. Thank you to Annie, Danae, Nina, Joe, Bethany, Melissa, Bev, Audrey, Cici, Jennifer and Cynthia.

Firehouse

A Visit to the Fire Station
On Wednesday, October 19, the first graders of room 208 visited Cambridge Fire Department Headquarters just outside of Harvard Yard. This was part of their Fire Safety Week study. The firefighters of Cambridge led them on a great tour of the station, including the brand new rescue truck. The students learned so much about the equipment used to fight fires, how firefighters gear up before a call, and all about safety precautions, like dialing 911 and having safe escape routes and meeting places for families.

Smile

Smile! Celebrating World Smile Day
"Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.

As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that all of us should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®." (from worldsmileday.com)

So, on Friday, October 7th, Mr. O'Connor's first grade class helped spread Harvey Ball's message, passing on acts of kindness, helping people smile by distributing smiles.

Lauren Tarshis

A Skype Visit with Author Lauren Tarshis
Fourth and fifth grade students had the opportunity to visit with New York Times bestselling author Lauren Tarshis via Skype. Lauren Tarhis is the author of the "I Survived" series and editor of Storyworks Magazine. She talked to the students about what inspires her and about her writing process. The students asked thoughtful questions and had a great discussion. Thank you to Lauren for spending time with our students.

Her book I Survived: The Great Chicago Fire, 1871 is on the nominated list of books for the Massachusetts Children's Book Award. Her talk may inspire some to participate in the annual reading challenge.

Lantern

Beautiful Light
Thank you to Ms. Lilli and Michelle Kaufman for a lovely evening at the Lantern Garden Party. Ms. Lilli helped students create beautiful lanterns that glowed at twilight. Michelle supervised cider pressing. Thank you to all the parents who attended and contributed delicious dishes for the potluck.
