First Grade Social Studies “Community” Unit
On Thursday, December 8th, the first grade celebrated with families in a Community Gathering and Breakfast. The first graders sang songs in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. As part of their year long project based learning about "community," the students shared with parents what they had learned when they interviewed important King Open School community workers. They read speeches and presented painted portraits of non-teaching staff in an effort to reveal the “behind the scenes”work of the school. The children learned how many people are here to help them and how their work contributes to the King Open School community.

King Open Participates in Hour of Code!
Last week was Computer Science Education week and to celebrate, several classes in the school participated in an Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Our purpose was to demystify "code" and show that anybody can learn the basics of computer programming. Here at King Open students from Kindergarten to 5th grade had a blast playing coding games, building machines with legos, and programming Kibo robots!. You can do it at home too. For more info go to code.org or email our ITS, Sarah.

Library News: 3rd Graders Skype with a Famous Author!
On Monday, 3rd graders gathered in the library to Skype with Massachusetts native Jarrett Krosoczka. Jarrett is the author and illustrator of the Lunch Lady and Platypus Police Squad series, as well as hilarious picture books. Jarrett showed us his art studio and answered our questions about his current projects. As we watched, he drew pictures of characters from his books and even showed us his dogs’ tricks! Jarrett enjoyed “visiting” us for the second year in a row, and his books are flying off the shelves.
