Greetings from Principal Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,
As 2016 draws to a close, I wanted to offer a few words of thanks to all of you. You have entrusted us with your children and we take that trust seriously. You have gotten them to school on time and ready to learn. You support their learning at home by providing them a space to do their work, by sitting with them as they are frustrated, by asking them questions as needed and helping as you can. You have come to school events, contributed to bake sales and volunteered at dances, and given in ways that you are able, ensuring more opportunities are available to all our students. Most importantly, you have trusted us enough to communicate when you have had questions or concerns. In so doing, you help us grow as a school so that we can better support the learning of all students. We are all grateful for your commitment to our school-home partnership. When we work together, all our students do better.
Many holidays are celebrated this vacation, each with its own message and traditions: Christmas, with its wishes of joy and peace; Hanukkah, the festival of lights; Kwanzaa, a celebration of family, community, and culture; New Year’s, a time to reflect and aim high for the coming year. May you find comfort in the traditions and celebrations your family holds dear. All of us at RAUC look forward to welcoming your children back in 2017!
Peace,
Julie Craven

Teaching Learning Focus: Choice Words
Staff continues to engage in weekly professional development with the book How to Create A Culture of Achievement. The past few weeks have focused on Chapter 4, Choice Words. The chapter continues to build capacity to support academic excellence and social justice for all of our students. Specifically, the chapter stresses the importance of language, and the impact it has on academic and social development, and the ability to build a positive community.
Staff reflected on many ideas from the chapter, including the idea about growth mindset. A quote that resonated with staff was “It’s not about immediate perfection. It’s about learning something over time: confronting a challenging and making progress.” Relating to our Core Value of We Reflect, staff felt strongly about the idea: “do the next right thing.” There were many productive conversations about how this language can help students both behaviorally and academically. The powerful combination of active listening and problem solving when stuck can help both our students and ourselves to move forward.
One Voice, One Sound Concert:
February 2nd
Community Dinner: 5:15 - 5:45PM in the cafeteria
Concert: 6PM in the gym (performers to gym at 5:30PM)
Please mark your calendars! As you know, one of our new RAUC core values is to seek Unity. On Thursday, February 2, RAUC will celebrate our students as we come together in one voice, one sound, to make music. Start the evening eating dinner as a community. The school will provide pasta and salad. To celebrate the many cultures that enrich our school, we invite families to bring a dish to share as well. The concert will be held in the gym, featuring students performing in the Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Urban Legends, and Jazz Band.
