Message from Principal Yung
Dear Families,

I hope that you have a safe and restful winter break. School resumes on Tuesday, January 3rd.

This Thursday, our entire school will be at the Museum of Science on a field trip. This is a special, shared, experience for all students and staff. Thank you to the parent chaperones that are able to help us. We will leave our school at 8:30AM and return at around 2:30PM. While at the museum, students will watch “National Parks Adventure IMAX” in the Mugar Omni Theater. This field trip is fully funded by the state’s Expanded Learning Time grant.

D. Jean

Who’s Who at the King School
We have a new nurse at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School. Ms. Dominique Jean comes to us from the Graham and Parks School, where she was the school nurse for 2 years. Before joining the school district, she was a pediatric nurse for 10 years at the Windsor St. Health Center. Dominique became a nurse because she is a “people person” and at the end of the day she wants to feel as if she has made a positive difference in someone’s life. She is committed to providing high quality care for students and to partnering with parents to ensure best outcomes for families.

Every summer Nurse Jean travels to her native country of Haiti and runs a mobile health clinic. She also runs a nonprofit whose primary mission is to generate financial and material support to develop and run educational programs, job fostering, vocational training, health maintenance programs, sporting activities for youth, emergency assistance to the needy, economic, and technology assistance to small vendors or independent entrepreneurs and small industries in the Plateau region in Central Haiti. If you would like to learn more about her organization, please visit OSDPC.org.

Happy Holidays from MLK Friends
MLK Friends, our school's parent group, wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for a great start in 2017! We look forward to fun events like the Light Up the Night Lantern Walk on December 21 at 6PM, the January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, and the February Chinese New Year Celebration, as well as many other fun events to connect families in our school community. We thank all those who have contributed to our school this fall and welcome you to volunteer with us this spring! Email Christina Lively for more information.

Water Bottles

Thank you!
Dear Parents,

We got a great response from all of you and we reached our goal of collecting enough water bottles for every MLK student. With much gratitude, thank you to all the parent volunteers for your energy and dedication! These bottles will be transformed into something that is designed to inspire, guide, and connect you with your children.

Please look forward to receiving these gifts for use over the holiday break.

Hoop House

From the Garden
"This was the first fall for the new garden at MLK and the school community was provided with an excellent harvest. Students were able to taste a multitude of different fruits and vegetables. They also made apple cider using a traditional cider press! It has been a great first year for the garden, CitySprouts, and the MLK school community. We are looking forward to an even better spring.

The garden has officially been put to bed for winter. That means all of the plants have been pulled up except for perennials. A few classes planted winter rye with me. Winter rye is important because it will continue to grow very slowly over winter and will help to prevent erosion of soil from the plant beds which is important in building soil health.

Sweet PotatoesAnother very exciting update is that we've built a hoop house over one of the beds in the garden. The first hoop house at MLK! A hoop house acts as a small green house that will continue to keep the plants warm and hydrated over the course of the winter. Erin Glover's and Sarah McEachern's classes with the assistance of Teresa Walker have started a class science project using the hoop house. It is a really exciting project where they will take care of, monitor, and harvest the plants when ready.

Students can look forward to Daikon radishes, watermelon radishes, red Russian kale, purple scallions, arugula, and lettuce greens. This is the first project of its type so we are really excited! CitySprouts will be back in February and ready to start planting in the New Year!"
