Message from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

On Monday our nation celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. While we do not currently have a schoolwide practice connected to this holiday, I know many teachers do reflect with students on its meaning. Indeed, Dr. King’s messages and actions are perfect matches for our new core values, inspiring us to keep reflecting, aiming high, seeking unity and having compassion. I look forward to finding ways to be more intentional as a community about these connections next year.

In my own reflection, I came across one quote of Dr. King’s with particular resonance for our learning community: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” For students, this can mean starting the outline for an essay or tackling a perplexing math problem even when they are not fully sure where they are headed. That requires faith--in themselves and the process. The job of the adults in their lives is to help develop the growth mindset that enables them to take that first step. For parents, guardians, and educators, the quote reminded me of the challenge of supporting a young person knowing we may not see the results of our efforts for years. Students are still growing into the future adults they have not yet fully envisioned. Our faith is that our steps today will help them find a vision that fulfills them, and will provide them with the tools to reach that vision, whatever it may be. I am grateful to be in a community that commits these acts of faith daily.

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

One Voice, One Sound Concert
Thursday, February 2nd
Community Dinner: 5:15 - 5:45PM in the cafeteria
Art Gallery: 5:15 - 5:45PM in the upstairs hallways
Concert: 6PM in the gym (performers to gym at 5:30PM)

Please mark your calendars! As you know, one of our new RAUC core values is to seek Unity. On Thursday, February 2, RAUC will celebrate our students as we come together in one voice, one sound, to make music.

Start the evening eating dinner as a community. The school will provide pasta and salad. To celebrate the many cultures that enrich our school, we invite families to bring a dish to share as well.

NOTE: In a further celebration of unity, we are also featuring displays of artwork from all grades in the upstairs hallways. The concert will be held in the gym, featuring students performing in the Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Urban Legends, and Jazz Band.

Please be sure to label ingredients if you do bring a dish to share.
