RAUC
  January 24, 2017
Greetings from Principal Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

Friday, January 20 marked a significant day in our nation’s governance--the peaceful transfer of political power. As I noted with staff, we at RAUC are fortunate. We come together daily as educators and learners to work toward a common and beautiful purpose: academic excellence and social justice for all students. We do this as a diverse community--from different backgrounds and from across the political spectrum. In so doing, we are a daily affirmation of the promise of our democratic nation.

To mark the significance of inauguration day in our democracy, RAUC social studies teachers engaged students in activities to encourage civic discourse, inviting students to reflect on what is good advice to give a new leader. As always, all teachers continue to support students in listening actively, disagreeing respectfully, and acting in ways true to our RAUC core values: reflecting, aiming high, seeking unity, and having compassion. With respect,

Julie Craven

winter dance

Friday Night's Winter Dance was a Hit!
With about 150 students in attendance, it was certainly a night to remember. Students danced the night away and were able to capture the memory with pictures from a donated photo booth. The school dance provided many students with a safe and fun environment in which they could absolutely be themselves. Students who tend to be very quiet during the school day were having a blast on the dance floor, making connections with peers they don't generally engage with. This speaks to our school's sense of community and how food and music bring people together in unity! "It was LIT" is how one of our 7th grade students described the night!

A special thank you to Ms. Boadu and the students of the School Spirit Elective for creating flyers for the dance, for selling tickets during lunch, and for creating signs that helped with crowd control during dance check in. Another special thank you to Gissela Rendon, Families of RAUC, and to the Gately Youth Center for supporting the dance through food donations and volunteered time for chaperoning. We hope to see you all at the next school dance in the Spring!

Hidden Figures
Whole School Field Trip Friday, 1/27 to Apple Cinemas in Fresh Pond
This movie is about three brilliant African-American women at NASA who serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. This was a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. Watching this movie together supports two of our core values: Aim high; seek Unity.

We will depart RAUC at 9:05AM, and walk to Apple Cinemas. We will return in time for lunch. All students must dress according to the weather forecast. Cost: $5.00. Students may purchase water and popcorn at a concession stand. (No candy or soda will be available for purchase.) Students have received a permission slip (see attached). Please return it ASAP to child’s advisor.
