Social Networking and Technology: What's a Parent to Do?
Joani Geltman, MSW, Child Development and Parenting Expert

Date:
Thursday, March 2nd, 7PM (6:30PM social hour)
Location: Tobin/Vassal Lane auditorium, 197 Vassal Lane
Presented by: Vassal Lane Upper School and its feeder elementary schools - Graham & Parks, Tobin, and Haggerty

Are you considering giving your child a smart phone for the first time? Is your child is texting and engaging with their friends on social media? Are you concerned about how your child is affected by their 'online world'?

Join fellow parents of middle school/pre-middle school aged children for this highly engaging and down-to-earth seminar with child development specialist Joani Geltman. Learn about the introduction of personal technology and social networking to kids of this age. Parents will take away strategies and tools to manage, monitor and mentor their tweens as they navigate the world of social media for the first time.

Joani's seminar will highlight the following: Understand how the “emotional brain” of a tween gets “turned on” by social networking; Understand how the “Imaginary Audience” influences your tween’s performing on social media; Learn which apps are safe and unsafe; Learn strategies to monitor and set limits around phone and internet use; Learn how your own behavior with phones and computers can positively and negatively influence your tween.

Come at 6:30PM to enjoy light snacks and engage with fellow triad parents.

Art & Science in One: Volunteers Needed
Do you have Fridays from 11:30AM to 1:30PM free? I am now recruiting volunteers for this spring’s Art & Science in One program.

This will be the fifth year of the program in one upper elementary classroom (Susan Grassey’s). Volunteers receive training from a drawing instructor, and then pair up with the students one-to-one for nature journaling trips to Fresh Pond Reservation. Art & Science in One builds basic science skills of close observation and documentation. You don’t need to have a science or art background to volunteer. For parent volunteers, it is best if you are not a parent in this particular classroom where the program takes place.

Orientation is on March 31st and registration begins now. More info and FAQs: AS12017Tobin.Eventbrite.com

You can contact me directly by email if you want to learn more: [email protected].

Please spread the word to neighbors, grandparents, friends and colleagues who might be interested and whose schedule might be flexible enough. We recruit broadly in the community for our volunteers, for this and other programs in all the schools. I’m excited to be bringing Art & Science in One to Tobin again!
