American Montessori Society Conference
Last week, our own Susan Grassey (UE teacher) and Erin Gutierrez (Montessori Resource Teacher) presented a workshop at the American Montessori Society (AMS) national conference in San Diego, CA. Over 65 participants came to hear how our school incorporates the Common Core Mathematical Practice Standards into the Montessori Elementary mathematics curriculum to develop deeper conceptual understanding and mathematical thinking. Audience members reviewed the 8 practices developed by the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), watched a video of a classroom lesson with the practices highlighted, and heard about techniques that have been implemented at Tobin to highlight the practices and support our students in becoming deeper thinkers and stronger mathematicians.
You may wonder, what are the math practice standards? The mathematical practices are what students DO, THINK and SAY as they learn mathematics. The workshop received overwhelming positive support from participants, with some being quoted as saying, “You are SO ahead of the curve with your work!”, “How can you support our school in getting this started?”, “This workshop made the whole conference worth it for me!”
These inspired participants already have us thinking how we can continue to share the amazing work and professional development that goes on at Tobin Montessori on a daily basis in support of improving student learning!

Free & Open to the Public
Circle Up is a work of investigative theater that explores the Academic Achievement Gap and how it plays out in the culture and climate of a community, including our own. (The Achievement Gap is a discrepancy in the academic outcomes between white students and students of color, caused by structural inequality in social institutions, with life-long consequences). Circle Up gives us a chance to see and hear what is going on in urban high schools by listening to the voices of real students sharing reflections about the effects of opportunity gaps on their everyday lives. It investigates the issues of equity and injustice that have created the achievement gap and the barriers that maintain it. The play begins with a journalist asking if she can inconspicuously observe a class in order to gather research for her article on the academic achievement gap. This theater class welcomes her into their warm-up circle. The students portray a variety of diverse characters by telling their stories and acting out scenes from their lives. The play Circle Up is an investigative theater piece based on taped and transcribed interviews from the Cambridge community and beyond. Circle Up is written by Betsy Bard, directed by Vincent Ernest Siders and performed by Youth Ambassadors from the Underground Railway Theater.
