Rockwell

Lizzy Rockwell Visits
All kindergarten and first grade students spent time with author and illustrator Lizzy Rockwell. Lizzy started doing illustrations for her mom's books, author Anne Rockwell. he first book she illustrated with her mother was Apples and Pumpkins. Mother and daughter did 14 books together. Now, Lizzy is doing her own books. Her favorite books are storybooks, non-fiction, and reference books. Some of Lizzy's books include A Bird is a Bird, Plants Feed Me, and the Busy Body Book. Lizzy emphasized that words and pictures tell the story.
Thank you to the Friends of Baldwin for funding this remarkable in-school enrichment for the kids.

Space Station

Earth’s time as an ideal habitat is running out. Your mission is create an incredible space station somewhere in the solar system that can sustain human life.

Our fourth grade students are up to the challenge. Their projects involve creating a plan, writing a description, drawing a space station, creating a 3D model in Tinkercad and finally printing a 3D model of their design. Thank you Friends of Baldwin for funding the 3D printer!

Take Shelter in a Book Reading Challenge
The annual Baldwin reading challenge is underway. Baldwin students are challenged to read 5,000 hours in 5 weeks. Students may choose to collect pledges from adults to to sponsor their reading. Money raised will be donated to the Salvation Army Our Place Day Care Center for homeless children, located in Cambridge. At this Friday's all-school meeting, Nakennia, President of the Salvation Army Our Place Daycare Center will speak to the kids. On March 31st, Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City speaks to kids about homelessness. Parents and caregivers are asked to support your child by reminding them to read and to fill out their reading log.

TED talk

IdeasWorth Spreading!
Each year, the 5th grade students prepare a TED Talk. They select a topic they were passionate about. and they prepare a TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) talk and they present their their ideas to the 5th grade families at an enlightening TED Talk evening. Topics include sports, politics, education, and more. Keira spoke about the overprotection of youth. Jeremiah made the case that LeBron James is the greatest athlete, Myles spoke about virtual reality, and Maimouna spoke about listening carefully to what people have to say before we react and just because people have different opinions doesn't mean that they are wrong.

All-School Book Swap
Mrs. Miller's 5th grade students and their buddy class, Ms. Corianne's kindergarten students invite all Baldwin School students to participate in a Book Swap. Their goal is to provide all students a book that is new to them.

Decide if you have a gently used book at home that would be good to pass on to another student. Books must be appropriate for JK - 5 students. They can be hardcover, paperback, chapter books, picture books, or joke books. Look for a book swap box outside your child's classroom where you can drop off your donated book. When enough books have been collected, every student will get to choose a book.

Ballroom Dancing

Mad Hot Cambridge Ballroom Dancing Showcase - An Evening of Joy
Baldwin fifth grade students along with fifth graders from other Cambridge public schools showed off their ballroom dancing skills. This annual event never disappoints. It was incredible watching the kids dance the Merengue, Waltz, Salsa, and Tango. Proud parents and teachers cheered them on. Congratulations to Jaden and Alexandra. They were presented with the good citizen award for their positive attitude during the ballroom dance classes. Congratulations to Ameir and Iris who were selected for their impressive dance style and skill.

STEM Cards

STEM Club Fun
Every Friday morning, amazing things happen in the library. Recently, students in STEM Club participated in the Engineering Design Process with creative building, while tying into Ms Kugel's reading program about homelessness and housing. Students built houses out of playing cards. Students found that some cards are slippery and are hard to build with. They came up with ideas, like using paper towels, to reduce the slipperiness.

The previous week, the students built Bristlebots - little robots built from toothbrushes and cell batteries.

Thank you to the many parents who put in a great deal of time, planning and prepping to make STEM Club extra special for the kids.
