Black History Month

Black History Month at the Library

In February, Librarian Jen explored Black History with students in grades K-3 through read-alouds and book talks. Staff and parents of color joined us to read to children, as well! On March 1, Jen hosted an Open House to showcase the library’s extensive collection of books about Black History and by Black authors and illustrators. Students were riveted listening to new biographies on inventor Lonnie Johnson, civil rights activist Audrey Hendricks, and fashion designer Anne Cole Lowe.

Raul

Illustrator Visit
Raúl the Third (Gonzalez) had an exciting week. First he got the call that he won the Pura Belpré Award for Lowriders to the Center of the Earth, and then he visited King Open 4th graders! Raúl shared stories about growing up in El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico, and how he came to love reading and drawing comics and going to libraries. He made us laugh and encouraged us to keep drawing, reading, and dreaming!

Research

4th Grade Research Project
On Thursday, January 19th, the families of Caleb and Amy's 4th grade classes celebrated the culmination of the study of Regions of the United States before 1400. Students researched 5 Native American regions. Their nonfiction research was focused on main ideas and details. The classes read many legends of Native nations during reading and read aloud times. For the final project of this integrated history, geography, art, and English Language Arts unit, students wrote their original legends. Families were delighted with the published writings.

Ballroom Showcase

Mad Hot Ballroom!
Congratulations to our 5th grade students who represented King Open so well at their ballroom dance performance on Wednesday, March 15th at CRLS. They danced amazingly and should be very proud of their accomplishment.
Congrats to James Cyrus and Dala Shawabkah on being awarded the Ballroom Dance Recognition Award, as well as Anaida DaCosta and Danny Brightman for winning the Merengue Dance Off!

Thanks to friends, family, and King Open staff for supporting these students at the event.
