A Note From Principal Williams

Dear King Open Families/Caregivers,

I hope you are well and that your child is having a great year full of learning!

As you know, the space available for outdoor play is much smaller than the space available to us at 850 Cambridge Street. While we have made adjustments to maximize the use of the current playground spaces here at Broadway Street (our temporary location), the limited number of play structures available to students impacts the number of play options. Karolyn Feeks Maws (KO parent), Fred Fantini (School Committee), and I met with Owen O'Riordon, Department of Public Works (DPW), to discuss possible modifications to the playground. At a meeting on March 17th, DPW agreed to purchase additional play resources for the center recess yard. DPW also hopes to provide a cosmetic face-lift to the center playground over the summer. This is great news! While DPW has not finalized what play structures will be installed, they did agree to purchase a mobile block play system. Please visit Imaginary Playground for more information about this system. We believe that this mobile block system will be a wonderful addition to the KO playground. We hope to receive this mobile block system prior to the close of the school year.

As always thank you for your continued support!

Yours,

Darrell Williams
Principal

King Open Celebrate Autism
Awareness Week

In honor of Autism Awareness Week, the King Open Community celebrated a “Week of Unity”. Throughout the week facts were shared about Autism, learning styles, cultures, languages, and the differences that bring the King Open Community together. In addition, on March 29th a group of 5th grade students attended the “Light the it Up Blue” event at city hall in honor of Autism Awareness Day. They presented student written poems about friendship, acceptance, and unity.

Monument

4th Grade Breakfast - Study of Regions of the United States, National Parks and Monuments
On Thursday, March 30 the fourth graders and their families and friends enjoyed a culminating event that celebrated the study of Regions of the United States, National Parks and Monuments. The event was held in the library. The projects were created with partners, and emphasized collaboration and creativity. The students displayed their research writing that was part of this integrated project. Adrienne Stang, K-12 History and Social Science Coordinator, attended this event. It was the first time Amy, Caleb, Jonathan, and Luisa created this museum with their classes. The community feeling was great.
