  April 25, 2017
Julie Craven

Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,

We welcomed your students back this Monday, and it was a pleasure to see them happy to reconnect with their peers and teachers. We are in our home stretch! There are a number of dates in this newsletter--a reminder of the upcoming MCAS dates, a school dance sponsored by 8th grade families, and graduation. Be sure to check them out.

I also want to let you know about a staffing change. LeeAnn Sutton, our orchestra teacher, has been on a leave of absence to pursue an administrative degree at Harvard. She has accepted a position to lead an arts department out of district. We will miss LeeAnn and are grateful for all she has done to build RAUC’s wonderful orchestra program. We are also excited for her as she takes this next step in her career. I am delighted to announce that Brittany Phillips, who has been filling in for LeeAnn this year, will move into the orchestra position on a permanent basis. I know Brittany will continue to build on her fine work this year as our music program keeps growing.

Finally, grades went live on Thursday, April 13 and were mailed home to those without internet access. Please contact the school if you have not been able to access them or did not receive them @ 617.349.4060.

With respect,

Julie Craven, Head of School

Baba Yaga's Assistant - cover

Author Visit!
On May 23, the RAUC library program will host Marika McCoola, New York Times-bestselling author of the graphic novel Baba Yaga's Assistant. Marika, an acclaimed author and illustrator, will teach a day of workshops in the 6th grade ELA classes. Students will explore how pictures and words work together in graphic novels to tell a story, and then write and draw their own comics. Learn more about Marika and her book here: http://www.marikamccoola.com/. Huge thanks to Friends of RAUC and the 6th grade team for supporting this event!

Volunteers Needed: Support the Last Dance of the School Year!
Friday, May 5 | 6-8PM | RAUC Cafeteria
Tickets are $5; food and drink will be available for purchase. This final dance is sponsored by 8th grade families. We need volunteers and donations, please sign up here: http://bit.ly/2pvJygc. As always, all proceeds go directly to school enrichment activities, including scholarships for the upcoming 8th grade trip to Washington, DC.

Families of RAUC Meeting
Wednesday, May 10 | 6-8PM | RAUC Library
Speaker: 6-6:30PM
Business Meeting: 6:30-8PM

Jason Everhart, RAUC teacher, will speak about digital identity and its impact on student performance at RAUC. The presentation will include data collected from eighth graders about their online use and how they perceive its influence on their health and academic success. While online bullying will certainly be a part of the discussion, this presentation will focus less on internet safety and more on what our students are telling us about the importance of their digital lives. The discussion will be interactive and informational, wrapping up with strategies for continuing the discussion at home.
