social learning lab

News from Ms. Mayya in Room 283
This month the Boston University Social Learning Lab has been playing fun research games with the children. They are learning how how children learn from different kinds of information sources-- like books and people! In studies they have done in the past, they found that some children think that books and other written information are really important to learn from and some children were not so sure. Interestingly, they found that the children who thought that books were really important to learn from could read themselves. On the other hand, the children who were not so sure were still learning how to read. Right now, they are trying to better understand what other kinds of thoughts children might have about learning from books and other written information sources. They are still working on completing the project, but would love to share the results once it's finished!

4th Annual End-of-Year Book Swap Planned
We need your outgrown, gently used books for our end-of-year book swap. All students choose one or two of the donated books to take home and keep. This is separate from the summer reading books we send home. Please bring any books you are ready to get rid of that are appropriate for our students to the office or up to the library. Thank you!

spring tea

Spring Tea in Room 284
Last week the students in room 284 held their annual Spring Tea. Each student could invite a special person in their life to be their guest. There were grandmothers, parents and siblings among the guests. Students and guests got dressed up in their finest outfits. They were treated to delicious cookies, fruit kabobs and of course, tea served in fancy tea cups! The students did a great job helping to make this annual event so special in their classroom!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Winners never quit and quitters never win.

HOST FAMILIES STILL NEEDED!
Will you be home July 6-9?? I am looking for 2 families who have older students who could host a 15-year-old girl from Italy or a 16-year-old boy from France for 3 days. They are going to an international camp called LPC (Leuthi-Peterson Camps) in Birchpoint, ME. They will arrive at Logan airport on Thurs. July 6 and leave Sun. morning July 9 by bus. This is a great opportunity to show these campers what typical American life is like; they aren't expecting anything special and will come with their own spending money and sleeping bags. Just include them into your daily activities. I am the contact person and coordinator for this area (we have some campers going to families in RI also) and will be here for support and questions should anything arise. Please contact me if you are interested or forward this info to someone who might be. Thank you!
