Message from Laurie Levine, School Adjustment Counselor
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Family Friends,
After 18 most meaningful years as the King Open School Counselor, I have made the decision to leave at the end of this school year. I leave with full gratitude for the honor of being part of your children’s elementary (and for those of you who remember, middle school as well!) school community, and thank each of you for the opportunity to support your children’s growth together. The work has been hard at times, but from that, we have celebrated together their small and big efforts and accomplishments; their pride and trust in themselves will forever warm my heart. I often tell children to take a risk, try something new, step out of their comfort zone; well, us adults have to do that too! So I am listening to my own advice and am taking the risk to work on my own as a counselor in the community. I take with me all that I have learned from your children about the courage and openness that makes these risks worthwhile.
I wish you all a most happy, healthy and peaceful summer.
With warm regards,
Laurie

Grades 3 and 4 Overnight Cape Cod Trip
By: Jean, Grade 3 Teacher
Grades 3 and 4 had an amazing trip to the Cape Cod Sea Camps in Brewster! Highlights included making s'mores and singing songs around the campfire, and discovering marine plants and animals during low tide on the bay. We caught and released different species of crabs, sea worms, and other sea life!

4th Graders and Olá 3rd Graders Make Stop-Motion Movies!
In library/technology class, the monolingual classes extended their social studies immigration/migration study. We read We Came To America by Faith Ringgold and created stop-motion videos based on the text. View the video >>
3rd and 4th graders in Olá are putting finishing touches on quick stop-motion movies, as well. They responded to the question, “What does being bilingual mean to you?” Watch Librarian Jen’s website for the finished videos.

From the Library
Summer is for FUN reading! Your child will receive a King Open Summer Learning folder. It is packed with lists of great books, sources for audiobooks, and program calendars for the Cambridge Public Library and Cambridge Book Bike. This year, King Open is giving each child a postcard to send to Librarian Jen, illustrating a favorite book they read or listen to this summer! A video introducing the postcard, as well as all of the book lists and flyers, can be found on Jen’s website. We will celebrate your reading in September.
The annual King Open Book Swap was a roaring success! Each student took 10 free books to kick off their summer reading. Tremendous credit is due to Olá parent Lisa D’Almeida. In addition to coordinating the fall Book Fair, Lisa spent many hours from September to June collecting and sorting used books and coordinating volunteers for the spring Book Swap. Thanks to our fabulous parent helpers: Meg Fairbank, Andrew Freeman, Jennifer Goulart, Andrea Heberlein, and Tiffany Soper.
The library circulates over 150 books a day, and we couldn’t do it without the help of shelving volunteers Laura Price, Ella Lesatele, Katy Downey and Grace Lee. Many, many thanks for your steadfast support!
