Sidewalk Art
Tobin Has Been Provided with a Unique Opportunity for Our Students...Twice!
In 2014 the City of Cambridge commissioned the artist team of Chat Travieso and Yeju Choi to create a distinctive public art project for a shared bicycle/pedestrian path between Concord Avenue and Field Street (near Fresh Pond). The artwork shimmers with bold colors, varied textures, and playful topography.
As part of a larger sewer-separation construction project led by Public Works, the City selected Fern Street as a safe-passage link between the Tobin Montessori/Vassal Lane Upper School building, the nearby Danehy Park, and surrounding neighborhoods - choosing to make it unique with public art. The proposal developed by Travieso and Choi transforms a utilitarian path into a striking public space for all ages to enjoy.
Employing colorful concrete and planting, the path takes in the entire length of the one-block Fern Street, allowing full functionality as a shared path while creating an imaginative moment on a traveling route. Building on the city's continuing mission to create a more playful public realm, this artwork sets a new precedent for fully integrating art into infrastructure projects.
In 2014, a group of Tobin students had a chance to work with the artists to help guide the vision and design of the project.
On Monday, June 12th, the artists took a walk through Fern Street with two more groups of students to see the project as it nears completion. The groups then went back to school to talk about their experience / reaction to the piece and began trying to come up with words/titles for the piece together. Stay tuned for the grand unveiling and block party hosted by the city in September!

Green Team reaches its goal and can now by an acre of land!
The Tobin Upper EL 5th grade green team has been collecting money for Change for Change, You may have seen them in the lobby for the past two weeks. On Thursday, June 15, 2017 at their Green Team meeting, the members counted up all the money and got a grand total $102.20! They surpassed their goal of $100.00. They will use the money to buy an acre of land in the rainforest. It will keep paper companies from cutting down trees and for new cities and stores from being built on the land.
The 5th graders have gotten to school early to raise money.
The Green team leader for the last meeting was Julia Murphy. All the other meetings that were held throughout the school year were run by Ms. Erin Stevens. The members of the Green team were, Emi Rodes, Avery Carangelo, Nathaniel McCullagh, Saffiya Tall, Nina Haddleton, Vivenne Little, Amrin Jenny, Piper Ullmann and James Toledo.
