Special Event: Hollis Watkins Visit
On September 29th, Civil rights veteran Hollis Watkins will visit the Martin Luther King School. Mr. Watkins will share freedom songs and stories from his long and eventful life with the students. We would like to thank King parent Eric Leslie (kindergarten) for bringing Mr. Watkins in to spend time in our community. Mr. Watkins will be speaking as part of a panel on the evening of September 29th from 6-8PM at the Bruce Bolling Building in Roxbury. Learn more >>

Gently Used Clothes?
Do you have clothes that your child no longer wears? The school nurse is looking for clean and gently used donations of long and short shelved T-shirts, and leggings and sweat pants all sizes are welcome. However, the biggest need is in smaller sizes.

Who's Who at the King
Robin Towner is a Special Educator at the King. Ms. Towner has been a full time member of the MLK staff for 5 years. Before becoming full time at the King, she split her time between the King and the Fletcher Maynard Schools. She was also a 5th and 7th grade classroom teacher in Florida. It was during her time as a classroom teacher that Ms. Towner became fascinated by how children learn. What made some kids struggle while others didn’t? She started thinking more deeply about learning differences, styles and stratagies. She has been a Special Educator for 20 years.

During her time at the King she has come to really love her Special Ed Team in particular but feels that all the teachers at the King have very high standards for their students. There is a great spirit of collaboration among the adults in the building. Everyone is working to give the students what they need. “There is a level of professionalism and collaboration at the King that you don’t see at all schools.”

Ms. Towner is also the CEA (Cambridge Education Association) representative in the building. She is committed to working with the union to improve service delivery to students across the district.

Rosh Hashanah
Cambridge public schools will be closed on Thursday, September 21 in observance of Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah 2017 begins at sunset on Wednesday, September 20 and ends on the evening of Friday, September 22.

What is Rosh Hashanah? Rosh Hashanah, literally the “head of the year” is the Jewish New Year. It is a time of inner renewal and divine atonement.

What foods do we eat on Rosh Hashanah? It is customary to have big feasts on both nights of Rosh Hashanah and there are thus a plethora of customary dishes, including: honey cake, brisket, tzimmes and more Rosh Hashanah recipes.

What are some Rosh Hashanah practices? One of the common practices of Rosh Hashanah is attending the High Holy Day services, where the shofar (a ram’s horn that is blown like a trumpet) can be heard. Many people go to a Tashlich ( symbolic casting off of sins) service where they throw bread crumbs into a naturally running body of water as a means of casting away their sins.
