Balloon Structures

FMA Architects Build Balloon Structures
FMA students worked in teams to try to build the tallest balloon structures they could using nothing but balloons, tape, and their ingenuity. Our budding MacGyvers learned that their success was highly connected to their ability to work well in their teams. Communication, collaboration, and support were just as important as great ideas in the structure building. Students later had the opportunity to watch MIT students build their own balloon structures, and took some ideas from the college students’ efforts. The MIT architects then had a second opportunity to build the balloon structures. We’re proud to say that most of the FMA teams built taller balloon structures during their second attempt. Yay! for great ideas, great learning, great team work, and amazing performances. We can’t wait to see their next projects!

Congrats to the Summer Reading Students
Congratulations to all the students who completed their Summer work Calendars and Reading Logs! This work included reading, math, and Spanish. There were over 40 names acknowledged during Monday Morning Meeting! Congratulations to all those scholars.

Index Cards

Paper Towers
In 304, we continue to challenge students’ knowledge of STEM by using index cards to build tall towers. Each team was given 50 index cards and 20 minutes. They had to build the tallest tower they could. It was fascinating to sit back and watch!

Alumni

FMA Alumni Share Their Wonderful Experiences at the FMA
A group of FMA alumni talked about their experiences as students at the FMA, and how those experiences impacted them during and after their time at the FMA. They shared their favorite teachers, experiences, and memories and learnings that stuck with them and had the greatest impact. Current FMA teachers found the talk invaluable; they got to hear about the impact that the school had on some of its alumni, and started thinking about how they impact their current students. A big shout out to the alumni and to the teachers for their attention and support.

Harvard

HGSE Equity Collaboration with Harvard Graduate School of Education Students
This year the FMA will continue its collaboration with the Harvard Graduate School of Education A397 course that focuses on issues of race and social justice in schools. This year we have the honor of working with four graduate students who will be focusing their time on researching and testing out equity and social justice based strategies and curricula for the school community. These students will be working alongside two of our school staff, Cherie Coulson, our school counselor, and Tonya Katz, one of our second grade teachers. These two teachers will also be participating in the Ed school course alongside the graduate students course for the remainder of the school year. Please join me in welcoming these graduate students. We look forward to our collaboration. Read on >>

CHANGE IN DISMISSAL
If you need to change dismissal times for your child (bus or pickup, call no later than 1PM on Wednesday, and 3PM during the rest of the week) you should call the office. Even if you notify your child’s teacher you should still notify the office (there might not be enough time for the teachers to let the office know).

THANK YOU FROM
