Historic

What Do Your Favorite Things Say About You?
Historic New England's in-class presentation to the 4th grade introduced both primary documents and creating scrapbooks to document history.

The students were guided through the history of the Pierce family. Antoinette Louise Pierce lived over 100 years ago and she kept scrapbooks. She saved newspaper clippings, keepsakes, and pictures that told us about her and what she was like. A family member showed the students what life was like by then using Antoinette’s scrapbook.

Students then created their own scrapbook pages filling them with their favorite things, reflecting what life is like for them in the 21st century. This program launches the monthly math scrapbook projects students will do throughout the school year.
Thanks to the Friends of Baldwin for funding this tremendous in-school enrichment!

Apple Cider

Cider Pressing
If it’s October, it is cider pressing month at the Baldwin. Our garden coordinator Michele Kaufman works with classrooms in the garden doing cider pressing. Students participating in every step of the process; washing, cutting, mashing, pressing, and finally tasting! They learn that it is hard work making cider. They have to use their strong muscles to turn the mashing wheel and using the press crank.

Students are also beginning to prepare the garden for winter. They are harvesting beets and carrots and planting winter rye.

Thank you to the parents who volunteered to help with cider pressing. Thank you to Michele Lower, Beverly Kennedy, Bernette Dawson and Robin Chen.

Heidi

Principal's Corner
During my entry interviews with staff, parents, and stakeholders, I listened for trends. One frequently mentioned area of concern was the culture of behavior and discipline at Baldwin. Thus, our staff members have been spending much of our professional time talking together about our schoolwide plans for supporting positive behaviors and responding to problematic behaviors. Here in the Broadside, I’ve listed a few key elements of our plan, but I’m also going to follow this article up with a more detailed description of our plan in a separate email later today.
