Multi-Cultural Night is Only One Week Away!
International Night, renamed Multi-Cultural Night, is coming soon (Wed., Nov. 8) and we're looking forward to putting together another year of fantastic Activity Tables. Last year was absolutely amazing. So many Tobin parents and teachers commented positively on the number of volunteers manning Activity Tables and how moving it was to see such diverse cultures proudly shared.

Story of Self
Ms. Yuliya, our wonderful art teacher, is teaching Room 283 students how to draw self-portraits as a part of Story of Self. The students use paint and oil pastels to create their images. Looking in the mirror helps everybody pay attention at the details while drawing a face. Everybody has fun!
Tobin Educators Present at a State Educators Conference
Our own LE teacher, Brittany MacDonald and Montessori Resource Teacher, Erin Gutierrez presented last week at the MassCUE conference (Massachusetts Computer Using Educators) at Gillette Stadium. Brittany and Erin shared some of the amazing STEAM work that has been taking place in classrooms at Tobin.
Language Days are in Full Swing
Most Fridays we celebrate all the different languages spoken here at the Tobin. So far we have said the Tobin School Pledge in Spanish, Japanese and Kreyol and Hindi. Thanks for all the families who have come by to help us celebrate our community.
Pumpkin Fun
Children of room 284 have been learning about pumpkins. They measured a pumpkin's height, weight and counted number of ridges among other activities.
Lysander's mom and dad came to room 284 to help the children carve the pumpkin. Children got to vote what kind of eyes, nose and mouth they wanted for Jack-o-lantern.
They got to scoop the seeds and all the fibrous strands out. They also touched the cap of the Jack-o-lantern. At the end we turned off the classroom lights and watched the jack-o-lantern glow in the darkness of the class.
Room 206 Seed Hunt
As part of our Botany unit, students have been learning about the parts of the plant. We have dissected a seed in the classroom and started a lima been growing in our classroom. On Friday we learned that seeds travel in many different ways: By wind, By water, By "animal express" (animals drop seeds), and By Hitchhiking - they grab onto an animal and take a hike to a new place to land and grow.
We were the animals during this experiment. All the students placed LARGE white tube socks over their shoes and then we walked through a field at Fresh Pond. It is amazing what hitched a ride!
The children pulled the seeds off and then examined them under a magnifying glass. We discovered that hitch hiking seeds have a special tool to help them hitch a ride - "spikes!"
Here are some pictures of the experiment (see above).
