International Potluck Fun!
On Thursday, October 26th, the entire Haggerty Community filled the gym and cafeteria for our annual International Potluck! We had a great a turnout! The food was delicious and plentiful! 10 countries were represented by specific country tables - thanks to those families who brought in clothing and artifacts and interactive exhibits! Thanks to Jafar and his two accompanists (funded by Friends of Haggerty) for entertaining us with their West African drumming! They captured the kids attention and them up and dancing. Thanks to Shelley Irvin-Kent for helping us secure this great entertainment. Our 5th graders also worked hard to help support this event - helping with country tables, arts and crafts, and the welcome table! Thanks to the 5th grade teachers, Ms. Stewart and Ms. Faucher, for the support! A big thank you to all of you who cooked, helped set-up, welcomed others, cleaned, and represented many different cultures for our community! We would also like to thank Nada, a current CRLS student and Haggerty alumni, who talked about the recent tragic event in Somalia and led us in a moment of silence.
A very big thanks also to Joe, our head custodian, who stayed late that night - putting our school back together for the morning. Any feedback on this event, please email Lissa or Carroll Magill (PTO President).

Winter Clothing Exchange
We have had a very mild fall, but the temperature will begin to drop! In the next couple weeks I will put up the winter clothing exchange in the main lobby. This is an opportunity to donate gently used winter clothes (jackets, mittens / gloves, snowpants, and boots) that your child has gotten to big to fit into. It is also a chance to take an item that your child may now need!
Begin to sort through your winter items, and I will send an email when it is set-up in the lobby.

Second graders have been reading Trickster Tales from around the world. We began within Cherokee tales gathered and retold by Deborah Duvall. The students’ scratch art of the animal characters is similar to the art in the books. Gerald McDermott’s trickster stories began with his Caldecott honor book, Anansi The Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti. Check out these books at the CPL to enjoy them with your child.
All 3rd graders recently received a free rhyming dictionary from the Cambridge Rotary club. Local Cambridge rotarian rhymed his way through an interactive presentation!
Music Corner

Kindergarteners have recently named fast tempo(allegro) and slow tempo(largo) in music class. We listen to recorded examples, pat steady on our laps, and identify a piece as having a fast or slow tempo. Here are some examples to identify the tempo:
Ask your kindergartener to pat steady to these examples and identify the tempo.
First graders have learned a new rhythm, the quarter rest! First graders can hear it, read it, and write it. Ask your first grader how many heartbeats a quarter rest lasts and how to show it (with hands and mouth). Can your first grader identify this song from its rhythm?
Second graders have been working on strong and weak sounds to identify the meter. We hammer along with Cobbler, Cobbler, Mend My Shoe, and bounce a ball while singing Bounce High, Bounce Low to hear the strong and weak sounds. Ultimately, we’ve identified what we call “two heartbeat meter,” the equivalent of 2/4. Students know how to draw bar lines after every two beats, always adding a double bar (“back door”) at the end. Ask your second grader to explain what they see in the rhythmic notation of Apple Tree:
And finally, SAVE THE DATES for upcoming events:
Family Folk Dance Night
Thursday, November 30 | 6PM | Gym
Peace Day Concert
Friday, December 15 | 8:15AM | Gym
We look forward to seeing you there!

Third and fourth graders meet once a week for a class that combines library and technology skills. We began the year with storyboarding stop motion movies with 3rd and 4th graders. After filming our movies using “Stop Motion Studio” on our iPads, we are now editing them in WeVideo. WeVideo is a web-based video creation and editing tool, similar to Apple’s iMovie program, however since it is web-based our students can login to their WeVideo account on any connected device using their CPS Google Login. Thanks to Friends of Haggerty, we were able to purchase full-featured accounts this year for all third through fifth graders! We hope to share some of our finished products with you soon...
