Our Changing Earth
A unit of the fourth grade science curriculum is investigating Changing Earth, which is aligned with the Massachusetts Science Technology and Engineering framework. Students expand their erosion, weathering, and deposition experiences beyond the classroom with a visit to The Thomas M. Maynard Ecology Center. In the Changing Earth unit students are learning about how weathering, erosion, and deposition occur and create landforms. During the field trip they went on a walk around Fresh Pond to practice using their developing observation skills to determine if an example is weathering or erosion and detail proof as to the cause of living things, water, or wind. Principal Corner
As things get settled and we move beyond the opening phase of school, it’s often the time of year when we hear from parents about the things that aren’t working well for their child. As we all know, children are growing, changing, individual, and unique human beings. It’s expected that we will need to incorporate ideas and feedback and work flexibly to meet the needs of students in the context of the new school year.

At Baldwin we ask you to begin addressing concerns you have by talking directly and openly with your child’s teacher(s). Please talk with teachers about the questions, suggestions, and ideas you have that will help us meet your child’s learning needs. The teachers in our community are interested in the same thing you are: healthy, thriving, learning students. Please remember this as you work with teachers to support your child(ren).

Of course, there are times when, together, a parent/teacher team can’t seem to develop an agreed-upon plan to meet the needs of a student. It happens! In those cases, you’ll need support from administration, and we are ready to provide that support if needed.

News from the Nurse
Hi Baldwin Parents,

It was very helpful when a parent recently let me know that a sibling of a Baldwin student developed a contagious illness. It was an important piece of information, because based on how illness travels, siblings are at risk of developing the same!

I would appreciate it if you have other children that develop anything contagious, to consider letting the nurse at Baldwin to know also. If you hear of illness’ in another school, this may also be something to share. Please refer to this website to review general health concerns.

It will be good for all of us to be on the same page about watching illness in our families and in our schools to help all of us stay safe. It is particularly helpful for those of us with more serious health concerns.

Thank you for your help with keeping Baldwin students healthy and safe!

Sincerely,

Dana Hyland, RN, 617.349.6746

DNA

Genetics & DNA
BB & N Upper Schools' Science Club for Girls came to visit STEM Club to talk about genetics and DNA. The students found genetic traits on each other (e.g. hitchhikers thumb, earlobes, others) and extracted DNA from strawberries!

Camp

CAMP DAY
Students in Room 208 earned a whole-class reward recently. They were able to celebrate with a camp day. A tent was set up where they could "read under the stars" by lantern. They also made t-shirts, vests, and bracelets, played a camp game in the hall, and had s'mores for snack. It was so much fun!
