Hour of Code

Hour of Code
The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. The 2017 Computer Science Education Week will be December 4-10. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

The King Technology teacher, Heather French, will be organizing coding activities for all students JK-5th during the week of December 4th. If you work in the tech field and would like to share what you do with our students please contact Ms. French. If you would like to start at home these websites have lots of information and free coding activities for all ages and levels. Have fun!

Splash Math

Splash Math at Home
Splash Math can now be used at home for the rest of the school year (for free) as part of our school’s subscription. This is only possible because of the generous support of the MLK Friends who purchased a second year of Splash Math subscription.

Splash Math complements two other math programs available to us through the school district, Symphony Math and Fasttmath. All these programs are used to review important math concepts during the school day when students have computer time. All of these programs are also available for your child to use at home.

Look for a letter coming in your child's backpack this week with instructions for home use and mark your calendar forWednesday, December 6th for a demonstration of Splash Math at School Council from 8-9AM.

Baby University (U)
Baby University (U) is coming to The Port, East Cambridge, and Riverside in January. Baby U provides a series of weekly workshops, playgroups, home visits, transportation, breakfast, and childcare during workshops on Saturdays. We offer weekly give-aways and you could win $400! If you have a child 3 years old or younger call 617.620.6204. Don’t forget to ask about our Dads Group!

Boston Cares

Looking for a way to give back?
Check out the Boston Cares Volunteer Opportunity Calendar.

The program is built around a calendar of volunteer opportunities featuring 250 monthly projects at nearly 180 nonprofits and schools. As a volunteer, you can sign up for one date-and-time specific project at a time, as often as your schedule allows. Opportunities range from Serving Meals at the Women's Lunch Place to tutoring adults at XCel Education toCrafts and Conversations with Seniors to environmental projects like Gardening on the Greenway.

Each project is led by a trained Volunteer Leader who works to ensure a smooth and successful project from all sides. They facilitate communication leading up to the project and support volunteers day-of.

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
