happy new year

Greetings from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

Happy New Year! And Happy Haitian Independence Day (on January 1, 1804, Haiti declared itself as the world’s first Black republic, naming itself with the pre-Columbian Arawak word Ayiti, or “mountainous land,” culminating 12 years of revolt by enslaved Africans against the powerful French Empire)!

We are excited to welcome students back after the holiday break. A reminder that there are only two weeks left in the semester. See further in the newsletter for reminders on how to make sure your student wraps up the semester strong.

We hope you are staying warm during this cold spell. We know that it can be a challenge to keep students dressed warmly when they are growing quickly. Please reach out to Miss Linette or Ms. Boadu if you would like support in making sure your students have warm jackets, hats, or gloves for the winter – by phone (617.349.4060) or email ([email protected] or [email protected]).

Best,

Julie Craven, Head of School

Understanding Your Middle Schooler
Ms. Boadu gave an informative presentation as part of the Families of RAUC speaker series on December 14th. She passed out an excerpt on the physical, social-emotional, and intellectual developmental profiles of 6th, 7th, and 8th. This excerpt comes from Developmental Design (DD), an organization dedicated to bringing developmentally appropriate strategies into classroom instruction. The majority of RAUC teachers are trained through DD and we use their ideas and materials as the basis for our advisory program. You can access the reading here >>

AVID Visits RAUC Tuesday, January 9
The AVID program is an honors program for high school students planning to apply to four-year colleges and universities. The program is selective and voluntary which means that students must apply and be selected to participate in the program. In the AVID elective course, students study writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking and study skills, as well as participate in college, career, and motivational activities. In addition to the AVID elective teacher, AVID tutors are college students who visit the AVID classes to support learning by challenging students to understand coursework more deeply. AVID elective teachers monitor and support progress in all courses to prepare students for acceptance into the college or university of their choice.

On Tuesday, January 9th AVID coordinator, Leslie Davis, will be at RAUC to share information about the program and application process with 8th graders. Because not all students are eligible to apply, students will be notified in advance about their selection to attend the information session. Please reach out to Ms. Boadu if you wonder if this program is a good fit for your 8th grader ([email protected]).

Families of RAUC Needs You!
FRAUC co-chairs and treasurer are all graduating this year with their 8th graders! FRAUC very much needs new members to step in and help keep this wonderful organization going strong. Field trips, and particularly the annual 8th grade DC trip rely on fundraising done by FRAUC. FRAUC also organizes the three dances each year that are so well attended by our students. It’s a once a month one hour commitment, with folks then taking leadership on particular events. Please come to the next FRAUC meeting Wednesday, February 10 at 6PM in the RAUC library and join this good work!
