snowy plants

Greetings from the Family Liaison

It’s been a crazy start to January with the snow days right after Winter Break, but we’re all starting to get back into the swing of things! We will have a K-Lo Market Wednesday the 24th and a Parent Chat on February 13th.

You may have noticed that your children are missing winter gear or accessories. If so, you should look here in our Lost and Found! We are overflowing with jackets, hoodies, gloves, etc., and we’re about to donate them. There is a lot of nice stuff that we would love to give back.

If you find yourself in need of school or community resources, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Cambridge Public Schools, and the city as a whole, have a lot of great services for people of all backgrounds. I am more than happy to help with making connections! 617.349.4865 or [email protected].

If you are more comfortable corresponding in Spanish, you should feel free to call and ask for Iris, or email [email protected]. If you haven’t met her yet, come by the Main Office and say hello!

Notes from Physical Education
Our young friends need to stay active during this cold weather. There are lots of things to do at home to keep them moving! Kids can jump rope, skip, dribble or catch a ball, jog in place while watching tv, dance, play leap frog, go out for a brisk walk….there are many, many options. Adults can join in too!

Fourth graders are going to start swimming at War Memorial Pool on Tuesday, 1/30/18! They will be swimming 90 minutes per week for 8 weeks. The students will be put into levels the first week. Students should be reminded that they should come prepared with a:
–Positive outlook
–Bathing suit and towel
–Plastic bag for wet bathing suit
–Warm hat (during cold weather) for the return trip after swimming.

Fifth graders have started their Ballroom Dance unit! This is our favorite time of the year. In early March they will have a showcase with a group of 5th graders from other Cambridge schools. 5th grade families are invited to the Showcase to cheer them on.

Urban Nutcracker
On a cold December morning, our music teacher, Ms. Maxwell and the 2nd Grade teachers took the entire 2nd grade on a trip to see the Urban Nutcracker at the John Hancock Hall in Boston. The Urban Nutcracker is a twist on the famous Nutcracker Ballet. It includes various types of dance/movement including, ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, salsa, step dance and acrobatics (and the music that accompanies many of these dance forms). In music class, using some of the pieces from the Nutcracker Ballet, 2nd graders had been studying 'variation and form', an element of music that tells us how a song or piece of music is put together. It was a delight for the students to hear music they had studied and see it come to life in this fun and unique show...it was great fun for all!

bridge project

2nd Grade SEI Bridge Project
This project is part of our “Materials & Their Uses” unit for science. Students had to design a bridge to build over a river in an area that gets a lot of rain. They first tested different materials to see if they were strong and waterproof. Then they worked in groups of 3 to choose materials and build the bridge, using the data they had collected from the tests. Yesterday we tested the bridges by spraying water and putting blocks on the bridges. All of the bridges passed the test!

It's That Time of Year: Flu Season
Just a reminder that children with fever, cough, body aches should stay home and recover, as they may have influenza or a flu-like illness. Call your pediatric health care provider for advice as some children may need Tamiflu, the antiviral medicine used to lessen the seriousness of the flu in children with medical conditions like asthma.

Tips to prevent the flu?
–Get flu vaccine every year as soon as it is available.
–Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand gel.
–Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into the inside of your elbow if you don’t have a tissue. Throw tissues away and wash your hands. Always wash your hands before touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
–Use household cleaners to clean things that are touched often, like door knobs, toys, and phones.
–Avoid close physical contact with people who are sick. Try to stay at least 3-6 feet from someone who is sick with the flu.
–Stay home from work and school if you get sick with a flu-like illness (fever with cough or sore throat) and avoid contact with others so the virus does not spread. Stay at home until you have been free from fever for at least 24 hours after your last dose of fever-reducing medication (like Tylenol, Advil or Motrin). For most people this will mean staying at home for about 4 days.
