Letters About Literature is a state and national writing contest in which our 4th and 5th graders are participating this year. Students write a letter to an author similar to a reading response entry. They are encouraged to consider the theme of the book and how it has changed their thinking about themselves and others in the world. We read Dr. Seuss’ The Sneetches and The Butter Battle Book to begin looking at the idea of “theme” in a story. Our brainstorming about theme came up with wonderful ideas. Can’t wait to read the letters! Don’t forget to visit the public library during the break!

A Note about Sibling Policy for Classroom Events
Your child’s teacher will be planning in-school classroom events to which you will be invited, such as authors’ breakfasts, plays, and presentations. We encourage and welcome your attendance. Please be aware that classroom teachers sometimes find it difficult to accommodate siblings (who attend Haggerty, not younger toddlers or infants) at classroom events. They also find that siblings attending events are missing their own classroom’s crucial instruction. To minimize these problems, we request that the invitation of siblings to such classroom events be left to the discretion of the host classroom, with input from the sibling’s classroom teacher.
Do You Have a Younger Child Who is Ready for CPS?
If you have a younger child who was born between 9/1/2010 and 3/31/2011, or if they will be 5 yrs old by 8/31/2015, they are eligible for the JK/K lottery (and “sibling preference” if one of your other children is at Haggerty in grades JK-4). Applications can be submitted to me here at Haggerty. Please look in backpack express for the sibling finder form, or please contact Lissa and let her know you have a younger sibling who is ready for school! The deadline to complete these applications at Haggerty is January 9, 2015 – after this date you will need to complete the application process at the Family Resource Center (before January 31st!).
