Charlotte's Web
Students in room 211 & 279, Lower Elementary read the book Charlotte’s Web while learning about character traits. They then used various materials to create some characters. Children chose either: Charlotte, the spider; Templeton, the rat; or Wilbur, the pig. When you open the box you will see the character’s internal traits. What creative children!
Mock Caldecott
Tobin’s LE students participate in the annual mock Caldecott for 2017 picture books. Students learn how to evaluate a picture book the same way that the official Caldecott committee does, looking at three aspects of the book: how well the pictures tell the story; design of the whole book; and artistic excellence. They have 38 books to look at that have all been published in 2017 and got starred reviews. Students take this very seriously! Stayed tuned to find out which books win Tobin’s award and which ones win from the official committee.
Literature Circle Group
An assignment recently given to our literature circle group reading Rules was to take the descriptions of Kristy’s bedroom and draw it. Here is Jasper’s rendition (pictured above) based on description. Read the descriptive excerpt from the book >>
A Friend from Australia!
This month Room 206 has been studying the continent Australia. On Tuesday, we had the treat of "FaceTiming" with a friend of Mizzy that lives in this amazing place. His name is Stuart Cook; he spoke to us all about life in Australia. Each student had written down a question they had about the country, and Stuart answered every one of them (sometimes with props - he happened to have a miniature kangaroo and koala bear figurines at his fingertips). We were able to experience Australia in a way that couldn't be possible by just reading books! At the end of the session, Stuart ran from the screen and returned wearing a Patriot's football jersey! He got quite the "cheerio" for that.
