Spaghetti Dinner - Success!
On Thursday, February 1st many members of our Haggerty Community came out to support our 5th grader's mission to go on a 2-night field trip to the Farm School in Athol, MA. This is an annual field trip, that they need some additional funding for so that every fifth grader can attend, regardless of their ability to pay. In this effort, our 5th graders made homemade meatballs, sauce, spaghetti, and a delicious salad - as well as brownies for dessert. There was a also a fun raffle - mainly filled with lots of highly coveted staff prizes! Thanks to all of the staff members who donate their time and energy to create these prizes! Thanks also to the many local companies who donated prizes to help support our 5th grader's cause. Special gratitude, to our local Mt. Auburn Star Market for donating all of the meat for our meatballs, Iggy's for the bread, and Russo's for the salad supplies!
We extend gratitude to all the families who bought raffle tickets! If you happen to have won one of our prizes, you would have already been contacted by Lissa. Thanks also to those who were able to attend the dinner! Our fifth graders are very grateful and excited for their upcoming trip in a couple weeks!

We have been reading Caldecott award winners and honor books from past years. We have also been discussing the illustrations of many books that are being considered for the award this year. Mid-February will bring the answers!
Upcoming Events
In March, author Heidi Stemple will meet with the second graders for a special visit focused on birds and her upcoming books about birding, owling and anything with feathers.
Ms. Novo Reading at Belmont Books:
I just volunteered to read for an event sponsored by Story Starters of Boston. Please join me if you are looking for a Saturday morning activity.

Read Across America
It’s time to start thinking about your favorite book character. On Friday, March 2nd the Haggerty School celebrates reading and great book characters. We dress up as a book character, transform the entrance to our classrooms and welcome guest readers into our school. Contact your child’s teacher to see if guest readers are needed.

Students have been busy finishing artwork for the school wide ART & TALENT SHOW on Thursday, March 8 from 6 - 7:30PM. Some skills they have been working on include weaving, using line design to draw and paint intricate mandalas, assembling wooden animal sculptures, using soft pencils and blenders to create winter scenes, and much more!
The art room is always looking to refresh and replenish our supplies. If have any leftover or new items you would like to donate, we could use the following for ongoing and future projects:
- Pipe cleaners (for creating figures and sculptures)
- “Funky” yarn in bright colors and interesting textures (for weaving)
- Original sculpey modeling clay in white (1 lb package) or mixed color pack (for sculpting animals)
- Balsa wood blocks (for carving Oaxacan-inspired spirit animals)
- Straight pins and needles
- Paint pens (for rock painting)
