Letter to Parents & Caregivers
This Monday we were thrilled to welcome scholars back after what we hope was a restful and restorative February break. We began the morning with a whole school Community Meeting which included a surprise Skype appearance from Principal Fernandez, which was met with wild excitement and applause it was a great way to kick off the week! Scholars also met in advisories for a schoolwide Black History Month lesson. One of the essential questions scholars discussed was, “Why do we “need” special months (e.g. Women’s History Month, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, etc.) dedicated to learning about minoritized groups in the U.S.?” Advisory groups thought critically about this and other questions regarding the history, significance, and future of Black History Month.
