Social Studies: First and Second
Grade Students Explore the Concept
of Community!

In Social Studies, grades 1 and 2 students have started their yearlong exploration of the concept of community. Students started by thinking about the groups of which we are members. This helps the children focus on what it means to be a member of a group. Read more >>

King Open

Memory Book 2014 - 2015
As you all know, at the end of this year, King Open will be moving to another building while our new school is being built. We have spent many wonderful years at this location and feel that it is important to recognize the time we have spent here. So, to commemorate our last year in this building, we will be creating a very special Memory Book (available for purchase) for our King Open families. In the past, our Memory Books have been focused on the graduating fifth graders. While there will still be a section of this book devoted to our fifth grade class, the book, overall, will represent all grades. We want this book to include all of our students and have begun working together, as a staff, to collect photographs from classrooms and special events. But we would love to invite families to contribute pictures taken at family breakfasts/gatherings/events/etc. from this final year at our school, as well. Please send pictures and direct questions to Casey Cross Sussman, who will be managing this project.

Update on Building

King Open/CSUS Project Update
William Rawn Associates and Arrowstreet Architects have started their initial user meetings with KO and CSUS teachers. For the KO community, social justice, project-based learning, curriculum integration, teacher collaboration, student collaboration, and parent engagement are just some of the discussion topics that are informing preliminary ideas about the new building design. To date, every KO teacher has had the opportunity to meet with the architect. Additional meetings will happen at a later time. Opportunities for parents, students, and the community input are being mapped out and will be shared with the entire KO community as soon as possible.

Broadway Street Update
Four KO parents (Norah Hass, Thom Doyle, Dabney Hailey, and Vishal Iyer) who currently serve on the KO School Council along with KO staff visited our temporary location at 359 Broadway Street on Saturday, January 24th. There have been approximately five visits by KO staff to the Broadway Street location thus far. As you know, King Open will be temporarily relocated to this location sometime after the close of the current school year. All KO staff (including KOED and Community Schools) has had the opportunity to visit this location and provide me with feedback regarding the organization and use of the space. While this is an ongoing process, I expect to have a close to final version of the KO plan as to the use of this space. Staff will be present at the school council meeting on Wednesday, March 18th to share the floor plan. SC parents who visit the space will also be available to share their thoughts. Please plan on being present.

CANCELED: MLK CELEBRATION
As you know, there has been unprecedented snow accumulation over the past three weeks resulting in the loss of 6 school days thus far. The loss of school days has impacted instruction as well as any related performances and/or celebrations. We have already re-scheduled the MLK Celebration and (with more snow in the forecast) feel the need to delay this important event again. As of today, a new date has not been identified. After vacation a new date will be selected and communicated to the KO community. Our desire is to maximize the number of program participants and families who want to attend. Thank you for your patience.
