Asian Pacific Month

New Traditions at MLK
May is Asia Heritage month and we are celebrating it with several school-based activities. This year is the first time that we have celebrated both Black History Month and Asian Heritage month and we view these endeavors as pilots. Monthly culturally-focused celebrations are frowned upon in some circles. They are seen as shallow and perhaps old-fashioned but at the King, we are looking at these monthly celebrations as just that and as an opportunity to get parents directly involved in what kids are doing throughout the school day. The planning groups for both Black History Month and Asian Heritage Month are made up of parents with one or two staff members. Our plan is to really celebrate and highlight the cultural aspects that the CPS curriculum would not touch with hands on, engaging, interactive learning experiences. Read on >>

May 25th Movie Night
Eagle Huntress, Rated G | 5 - 7PM
Eagle HuntressAishol-pan, a 13-year-old Mongolian girl, trains to become the first female in 12 generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter and rises to the pinnacle of a tradition that has been handed down from father to son for centuries. While there are many old Kazakh eagle hunters who vehemently reject the idea of any female taking part in their ancient tradition, Aisholpan's father, Nurgaiv, believes that a girl can do anything a boy can, as long as she's determined.

This is a special week for parents to show their appreciation. Thank you in advance! We will have a luncheon for the teachers and staff on Wednesday, May 9th. Please sign up at by clicking here to bring in food for the luncheon. Or you can email me with what you are able to bring, and I can add you to the signup sheet. Again, many teachers are being careful this year and have requested more healthy options (esp. with desserts). Thank you for respecting this request!

Thank you to Pam Mindell and to all the parents who help make this a special week every year.
