Estimadas Familias,

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Dear Families,

As I wrote earlier in the year, the use of technology has both positive and negative aspects. This week it was brought to my attention that many of our students are compulsive players of a game called Fortnite. Fortnite (note the spelling) is a free multiplayer cooperative virtual reality shooting game. A player chooses an online character (or "Avatar") to represent them, and then cooperates with other players on teams to shoot at each other and at monsters, and to be the last person standing. It seems to have become an obsession for many of our students and while it is important to have non academic activities in one’s life, students are reporting staying up all night to play the game as well as trying to trick parents as to how much they are actually playing. They are coming to school exhausted and falling asleep in the middle of class. If your daughter or son is playing this game, I encourage you to check in with him/her about the extent of play. I also want to re-share the district’s acceptable use policy with you and reiterate that any student at any age who is misusing school technology may lose the privilege of using it. Some resources you may want to check out include:

Screenagers
Family Tech Rules
Fortnite

I am excited to announce that our math coach, Johanny Hlatshwayo, has been awarded Harvard's Conant Fellowship for the upcoming year! While we will miss her terribly during her time away, this is a wonderful and much-deserved opportunity for her. Johanny will return to Amigos after her work at Harvard is complete. Please join me in congratulating her for this tremendous accomplishment.

I am also happy to announce that our upper school students have organized our very first gay-straight student alliance. The goal is to provide students with a safe space where they can be themselves. Interested students participate in meetings that take place during the lunch-recess block. This past Friday, students participated in the “Day of Silence”, a student-led national event where individuals took a vow of silence to highlight the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ people at school. We were all very proud of our students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
