Second grade studied under water habitats and room 204 was transformed into the sea!

Greetings from the Family Liaison

Can you believe the year is almost over? We have less than a month left but there is still so much more to do! We have our Academic Showcase and International Potluck, 3-5th grade Concert, Poetry Slam, Book Swap, Movie Night, Field Day, and Moving On Ceremonies for JK/Ks and for 5th graders. Keep an eye out for special events in the classrooms as well. And please note: the last day of school is June 22nd and it is an early release day. Kennedy-Longfellow students will be released at 11:55AM.

KLO

Moving On Ceremonies

On June 19th we will have two different Moving On Ceremonies - one for our youngest friends and one for our oldest.

5th Grade Moving On Ceremony
June 19 | 8:15AM | Auditorium
5th grade family and friends are encouraged to
attend.

JK/K Moving On Ceremony
June 19 | 12 - 1:30PM
Our JK/K students will have classroom ceremonies and the an ice cream social from 12-1:30PM. All family members are welcome.

Please direct any questions about these celebrations to the classroom teachers.

Don't Forget
We are all looking forward to our 6th annual Academic Showcase and International Potluck! It is a chance to celebrate our diversity and enjoy the company of others. The halls will be filled with samples of student work and the cafeteria will be filled with delicious food from around the world. You can show off your cooking skills with your family’s favorite dish. And this year we are also adding an Art Show! All students, JK-5th grade, will have art on display. Please bring your whole family. The event is on Thursday, May 31st from 5:30 - 7:30PM.

We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to our Muslim families for scheduling this event that includes our potluck during Ramadan. It was a major oversight that we didn’t realize until it was too late to change the date or time. We still want you to join us! There will be a lot to see, as well as great company. We will also provide take home containers so that observant families can sample the potluck at home after sundown. Again, we deeply regret the oversight and will be more mindful in the future!

Expeditions

Google Expeditions
Recently, Kennedy-Longfellow students had a truly unique opportunity when Google visited our school to share it’s Pioneer Program with our students and staff. Google’s Pioneer Program has been traveling through select areas of the US and Europe. Kathy Malone, KLO Instructional Technology Specialist, submitted an application for the KLO to be part of this experience last Fall. Google selected us in January and scheduled our event. This was an all day school event which took place in the school’s makerspace and library with back-to-back concurrent sessions. The event would not have been possible without the cooperation of all KLO staff. Read on >>

Friends of K-Lo Corner
The Friends of K-Lo has made great strides this year. We got our non-profit status so we can we can fundraise to support the school. We want to raise money for field trips and presenters, provide funds to make the annual book sale accessible to all our students, and to partially fund camp scholarships for students that would otherwise stay home. We have sent out support letters to families (check your mailbox!) and to some corporations. We are really getting rolling! Our last meeting of the year is on June 12th from 6-7PM….We’d love to have you join us.

We also hope you will join us for the our last Movie Night of the year on June 12th. The movie is free and it’s great fun! Doors open at 6pm and the movie starts at 6:30PM sharp.
And lastly, our ELA Coach, Lija Yang, has generously donated a BEAUTIFUL hand made quilt that we will raffle off at our International Potluck! Keep an eye out for ticket purchase information.

Jenny

Kenneth S. Neal Award Given to
KLO Teacher

Jenny Phillips, one of our awesome 3rd grade teachers, was just given the Kenneth S. Neal Award at the annual Mack I. Davis II Awards & Volunteer Recognition event! This award honors the collaborative work that CPS teachers and administrators play in the success of Cambridge School Volunteers programs. Jenny has been instrumental in initiating, developing, and improving the CSV Reading Buddies program over the past 20 years. Countless children have benefited from Jenny's remarkable commitment to Reading Buddies, and this award is well earned! Congrats, Ms. Jenny!

Ramadan Mubarak!
We wish our Muslim students, families, and staff a Happy Ramadan. We thought the following information from Jewish-Muslim Solidary Committee of Boston Workmen’s CIrcle (forwarded to us by Haggerty Family Liaison Lissa Galluccio) might be helpful for our non-Muslim families.

The dates of Ramadan change every year. This year, the holiday of Eid ul-Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast) will be celebrated on the evening of June 15th with prayer, visiting each other's homes, special meals and gifts for children.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast. This means they don't eat or drink anything from dawn to dusk. Young people often begin fasting as teenagers. Fasting allows opportunity for self-reflection, spiritual growth and many blessings. Ramadan is not a period of suffering or atonement. During Ramadan Muslims tend to pray more even if they're not fasting.

We can extend greetings by saying "Happy Ramadan" or "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Have a great fast." Again, to all members of the CPS Community who are celebrating Ramadan this month, we wish you a Happy Ramadan!

Survey

Got feedback?
We can't wait to hear from you! CPS is conducting our first annual Family Survey, and we hope to hear from you by June 14th!

If you haven't already received an email or text message, or it's gotten lost in your inbox, check out our Family Survey page and click on your family's school(s). You can also find questions & answers about the survey, view our outreach plan, and even make comments on ways to improve our outreach strategy.

For those who don't have a good way to take it from home, watch for survey-taking stations at events at school. We value your feedback and hope to learn and improve based on what we hear from you.

The survey is part of our continuous improvement efforts, a key component of our CPS District Plan

Clock

Not enough hours in the day?
As part of our ongoing efforts to learn and improve as a school district, Cambridge Public Schools has identified a frequently-cited obstacle: time.

Please join with us in discussing the recommendations of a joint report from the Cambridge Education Association and CPS Administration, which proposes extending the length of the school day.

Beginning with these school-based conversations, and continuing with a broad community process in Fall 2018, the Superintendent will develop recommendations for any potential changes by Winter 2018-19.

Learn more about this process on the CPS website. Upcoming discussions are listed below, many of which have been scheduled for a regular meeting of School Councils. There will be more opportunities to contribute your thoughts and ideas over the coming months. Or, feel free to email us.
