art show

Celebrating the Talents of Young Artists
The annual art show was extraordinary! The students worked hard all year to produce creative and detailed artwork. Every student choose their favorite piece to display on the walls of the lower level of the school, and their favorite 3D piece. Works featured 100 kindergarten self portraits, 3rd grade paper mache imaginary animals, needlepoint, mobiles, pastels, prints, collages and more. Learn more >>

Principal Corner
What a wonderfully busy time of year. It has been fun to see so many families at our recent Baldwin events, including the recent Art Show, Spring Concert and Math Carnival! I absolutely love walking around and seeing the energy and smiling faces. I wish I could bottle that Baldwin feeling!!

I write today to encourage you to fill out the family survey that the district has recently sent information about. This survey data is incredibly valuable to us at Baldwin and your participation is very important!

When this type of survey data comes out, I go right to it to think about the ways that we can better serve students. I’m also thrilled to read about those things we should be celebrating! Our Baldwin motto is “Baldwin: One Community, Many Voices.” We need your voice now!

Please fill out the survey and please be open, honest and candid. The better your feedback the more useful the tool!

With gratitude for your valuable time,

Heidi

math carnival

Mathematical Problem Solving Fun!
What an incredible Math Carnival! The gym was filled with hands-on, real world math activities for students and the parents to experience. Thank you to our math coach, Ms. Jayne Lynch for organizing a spectacular evening. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped lead many math games. Thank you to Mr. Kelly, Ms. Curry, Ms. Wong, Ms. Powers, Mr. Geiger, Ms. Carrie, Mr. B., Gojeb, Peter, Andrea, and Hope. Thank you to the many families who came to the math carnival. Thank you to Nicole, Dina, Rana and Cathy for their help with the food sale and to all the families who brought in delicious treats. Thank you to our custodial staff for helping with the set up. The math carnival is always a wonderful way to celebrate math in our everyday. As always, thank you to our students and the families for coming to celebrate their love math and learning. Thank you to the Friends of Baldwin for their support with the math prizes.

whale

In the Belly of the Beast
Thanks to the Friends of Baldwin, every student had the opportunity to hear from a marine biologist about whales and their environment. The lesson started with whales that are found in the waters off the coast of New England. Our students learned that there are threats to the whales in our oceans because of the damage we are doing to our environment. First grade student Sebastian said they also learned some amazing facts about whales like they are one of the biggest mammals and that all whales tails are different. There are over 500 whales in the United States! Whales make different sounds. But the highlight of the day was the opportunity to go into the whale and see its insides and how whales are similar to humans.

grooversity

Groovy Artist in Residence
What an honor to have Marcus Santos, a native of Brazil committed to teaching and performing Afro-Brazilian music and heritage through his Grooversity program teach our 3rd and 4th grade students for several weeks! At the end of their program, our students showed off their drumming skills for their families alongside an ensemble of Grooversity drummers and a dancer in a high-energy presentation. Grooversity is designed to celebrate cultural diversity and it certainly brought joy, rhythm and creativity to our school. Thank you to Ms. Heidi and to the Friends of Baldwin for making this extraordinary opportunity possible.

quill magazine

Our Own Magazine!
A group of students in the Literary Club celebrated their recently published, beautiful magazine, The Quill! Many students submitted stories and artwork for the magazine. The students learned a lot about the publishing process throughout the semester. Thank you to Mrs. Rogers, the club leader, for supervising a great crew. Thank you to the very supportive club parents for their help with the publishing process and the publishing party. Congratulations to Alexander, Jack, Maddie, Clara, Uri, Anna, Valentina, Isabell, Sophia, Keanu, Addison and Grace.

international potluck

International Potluck Luncheon
Our first grade students prepared for this annual tradition, an international potluck luncheon. The students learned and shared facts about their country of origin. Students and their families enjoyed cuisine from around the world and discovered each other's cultures. Thank you to Mr. O'Connor, Ms. Wong, Ms. Moylan, Ms. Hagg and Ms. L. and all the first grade families. Thank you to all of the parents who helped prepare the wonderful dishes and help to celebrate the cultural diversity of our community.

Thank you to Leslie, Cici, and Angela for their help with the weekly bread sale. The proceeds of the bread sale go toward a delicious luncheon for Teacher and Staff Appreciation. Thank you to Elisa V. for making such beautiful flower arrangements that adorned the tables. Thank you to the parents and caregivers who were so thoughtful, thinking about their child's teacher in creative ways. Thank you for the tremendous outpouring of love. Our teachers and staff are so grateful.

baldwin blooms

A Night for the Adults, for the Kids
Once again, Baldwin Blooms, a festive fundraiser for school enrichment activities and scholarships was a resounding success and a fantastic time! There is a machine of a team behind this event, working tirelessly throughout the year. That team is headed up by Jenny Monroe and Allison Henson. They planned every detail and it was truly remarkable. Great food, fun atmosphere (even in the rain) and a stunningly decorated venue.

Jenny and Allison had a great team on the Baldwin Blooms Committee. A very heartfelt thank you to Jenny, Allison, Nina Wootan, Audrey Day-Williams, Doug Gray, Cynthia Harney, Bethany Varrichio, Angela Wong, Chris Lim, Begum Koulbanis, Andrew Jankowich ,Emily Schebesta, Maritza Soto, and Bob Neer. Thank you to the expert painters Cici Wendel, Valeria Martin and Daniela Evan. Thank you to Leslie Duhaylongsod, Melissa Maldonado, Andrea Meyer, Jen Massa, Leslie Nielsen and Elisa Van Voorhis.

Thank you to Josiah Bonsey, owner of Manoa Poke (and former Baldwin student) for providing incredible fare as well as Boston Burger food truck. Thank you to Forge Baking, Rene Becker and Hi-Rise for the luscious desserts. Thank you to Cory Shea and the friends at Maud Morgan for a perfect venue. Thanks to the CRLS student volunteers. Thank you to our generous families, teachers and staff who volunteered their time and talents.

The funds raised at this event helps with scholarships and subsidies for overnight trips for grades 2 - 5, visiting authors like Charles R. Smith, Grooversity, drumming instruction and performance by Marcos Santos and Grooversity, the Whale Mobile, books for the classrooms, Rigamajig building kits for kindergarten, Wingmasters, Origami Master and more. Field trips to the Discovery Museum (K), Aquarium (grade 1), Museum of Science (grade 2), Boston Tea Party Museum (grade 3). This year, thanks to the Friends of Baldwin , every student will receive a book for Baldwin Reads (information coming soon!). They also help with the fun stuff like the dunk tank, bouncy obstacle course and Richie's Slush for field day, t-shirts for the entire school, scholarship tickets for Pat's Peak and the Red Sox, and more. Our students have benefited immensely from the efforts of the Baldwin Blooms crew and from the generosity of our school community. Thank you doesn't seem sufficient. We are so grateful. Thank you, Jenny!

Survey

Got Feedback?
We can't wait to hear from you! CPS is conducting our first annual Family Survey, and we hope to hear from you by June 14th!

If you haven't already received an email or text message, or it's gotten lost in your inbox, check out our Family Survey page and click on your family's school(s). You can also find questions & answers about the survey, view our outreach plan, and even make comments on ways to improve our outreach strategy.

For those who don't have a good way to take it from home, watch for survey-taking stations at events at school. We value your feedback and hope to learn and improve based on what we hear from you.

The survey is part of our continuous improvement efforts, a key component of our CPS District Plan

Not Enough Hours in the Day?
As part of our ongoing efforts to learn and improve as a school district, Cambridge Public Schools has identified a frequently-cited obstacle: time.

Please join with us in discussing the recommendations of a joint report from the Cambridge Education Association and CPS Administration, which proposes extending the length of the school day.

Beginning with these school-based conversations, and continuing with a broad community process in Fall 2018, the Superintendent will develop recommendations for any potential changes by Winter 2018-19.

Learn more about this process on the CPS website. Upcoming discussions are listed below, many of which have been scheduled for a regular meeting of School Councils. There will be more opportunities to contribute your thoughts and ideas over the coming months. Or, feel free to email us.
