Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,
The end of the school year is coming, with lots of fun activities planned. You can see details of events throughout this newsletter.
End of year can also be anxiety-producing for many of our students. Alice Cohen, district Lead Teacher in Charge of Social-Emotional Learning, shared insights on these emotions with staff, to remind us that behaviors we are seeing may be rooted in complex emotions students might not even be aware they are experiencing. She also provided suggestions of conversations to have with students to help them process these emotions. I am copying her thoughts below, as you might find them useful in your own interactions with your student. Read More >>
Got Feedback?
We can't wait to hear from you! CPS is conducting our first annual Family Survey, and we hope to hear from you by June 14th!
If you haven't already received an email or text message, or it's gotten lost in your inbox, check out our Family Survey page and click on your family's school(s). You can also find questions & answers about the survey, view our outreach plan, and even make comments on ways to improve our outreach strategy.
For those who don't have a good way to take it from home, watch for survey-taking stations at events at school. We value your feedback and hope to learn and improve based on what we hear from you.
The survey is part of our continuous improvement efforts, a key component of our CPS District Plan.
District Middle School Social-Emotional Learning Survey
The district plans to survey students every year as part of our District Plan, which outlines our commitment to rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning, with personalized supports that build their future success. Student’s participation will help us learn about general areas where we can continually grow to improve our practices. Please see the attached letter from the superintendent explaining the survey. There are copies of the letter in English, Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Amharic, and Bengali. If you would like support in a language not mentioned, please reach out to the school at 617.349.4060. NOTE: the letter asks you to let the school know by Friday, June 8 if you do not want your student to participate in the survey.
RAUC Musical Inspired and Impressed!
Huge shout out to the students, families, and teachers who put so much hard work into making the musical a success. We are especially grateful to Summer Elguindy and Josh DeWitte for all their hours and inspiration. Aiming high indeed! Thank you also to Families of RAUC for their donations and time for refreshments. In addition to making tasty snacks and cool drinks available for cast and audience alike, they also raised over $450 to support future school trips. Thank you for your commUnity spirit!
School Council Minutes
We had about 10 parents attend our Wednesday May 30 School Council meeting. The topic: address two changes and one policy that some families have raised questions about (cell phone policy, math plans, and schedule changes to support the math plan). What ideas does the Council have on questions the changes raise and the best way to get answers to families.
There were three themes around the math changes. Families wanted to better understand the data that sparked the changes, the research that led the district to the solution they arrived at, and the new curriculum that will be used. As a result of this meeting, Ms. Craven is working with Julie Ward, district Math Coordinator to plan a forum to address these questions That 7th grade math information forum will be on Thursday, June 14 at 9AM. The location is to be determined and will be shared as soon as it is known.
A reminder that School Council minutes are published on our school website.

SafeRoutes to School for 6th Graders
Sixth graders are participating this week in a bike safety program offered through a collaboration with the city and the school district. The goal of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is to increase the number of students who get to and from school by walking or biking. The program supports and encourages safe walking and bicycling to school in order to:
- Ease traffic congestion generally, and especially around schools during AM/PM peaks
- Improve air quality around schools
- Increase physical activity for students and realize cognitive and behavioral benefits
- Allow the continued growth of a sustainable Cambridge community
- Check out the website, which includes a wonderful informational video, at their website.
Health and Wellness Tip
Did you know? Students who are more assertive are less likely to get into a conflict with their peers. Students can practice being assertive by using a clear, calm voice and being direct with their message. Reach out to Ms. Boadu or Mr. McNulty if you have any questions about a tip or concerns about your student’s social emotional well-being.
Library Books Due June 8
All library books will be due June 8. I've communicated with your student if they have anything overdue. After that date, I'll get in touch with you so you can help them look. All students who haven't returned their books before the end of the year will be charged the replacement cost, which will be refunded if the book is returned later. If you have questions, please ask Sam Musher, [email protected].
