RAUC newsletter header
  October 16, 2018

Greetings from Julie Craven
It is hard to believe we are halfway through October already! There are a number of exciting events coming up for our RAUC community. Please make sure to scroll through the newsletter so you don’t miss them!

Our Family Engagement Team was able to look over the Hopes and Dreams that families shared at Back to School Night to identify common themes. Here’s what we heard from you: you wish for students to build their sense of self and their self-confidence, particularly in exploring new interests within and outside of school. You want students to find academic success and an academic mindset that helps them with future success. You want students to have fun at school, maintain old friendships and build new ones. And you hope they show that they are positive, engaged members of their classroom and school communities.

You also shared what you need from the school for a strong school-home partnership. It is clear that what is most important is clear and timely communication, particularly when there are any concerns, either academic, social or emotional. You also need us to know your child and make sure we are challenging your child, supporting them in dreaming BIG, and ensuring they have the physical and emotional safety they need to be successful and happy.

Thank you for sharing your hopes and dreams and your needs with us. We take them seriously and will use them to guide our work with students and with you. We will check back in on how we are doing at different points throughout the year. In the meantime, please know that we want to hear from you when you have questions or concerns. Reaching out to your student’s teacher is most often the right place to start. Of course Ms, Boadu, Ms. Sanchez and myself are always available if you have a deeper concern.

Best,
Julie Craven, Head of School

First RAUC CommUnity Dance
Friday October 26

  • This is the first of three dances, each one sponsored by families of a different grade level.
  • ALL students are welcome. As a RAUC community event, only RAUC students may attend; no outside guests please.
  • Tickets are $5, going on sale during lunch next week or at the door.
  • Refreshments (pizza, snacks, water) will also be sold at the dance.

RAUC 7th Grade Families – Help Support the Dance!
7th grade organizes the first RAUC school dance of the year. All proceeds go directly to school enrichment funds through FRAUC. Please help the 7th grade do its part by signing up to donate:
  • Goods to sell at the dance concession stand
  • Your time to set up, clean up, collect tickets, sell concessions or supervise the hallways during the dance.
  • (Parents do not chaperone the actual dance itself, but you can get a fun view from the periphery if you volunteer your time for one of these jobs!)
  • Costumes are welcome to our Fall Dance, but please NO masks or weapons.

Catch Urban Legends Performing on the Boston Commons!
Urban Legends has been asked to perform at the Peace of Mind event on the Boston Common on Saturday, October 20. The sponsors of the event, Children’s Services of Roxbury, hope to break the Guinness World Record for the largest human peace sign. Please see the attached flyer for more information on the event or go to their website at csrpeaceofmind.org. The event starts at 11 am, and RAUC Urban Legends will perform at 12:45 pm. This invitation came about when an organizer of the event heard the drummers in front of the school on Back to School Night. RAUC-on students and Mr. DeWitte!

Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week is October 15th – 19th! This is the first year Cambridge Public Schools will be participating, and we would love to show students there is ‘Lots 2 Love’ about school meals! 30 million students enjoy healthy lunches every school day in the U.S. We will have lucky tray giveaways, cultural meals, and special guest servers from the administration that week! Show your love on Friday with a heart-colored or –themed shirt, and earn a fun sticker! See you in the lunch line!

Student-created RAUC News
Each week students in the RAUC News after school club research, write, interview and produce news packages that are newsworthy for the RAUC and larger community. RAUC News is broadcasted weekly at school under the supervision of Ms. Saillant. You can check it out at this link or on our website: http://bit.ly/2QQgYjk

GSA Discussion
RAUC Student Activists Work for Justice

On Tuesday, October 2nd, our GSA (Genders and Sexualities Alliance) had a visit from Martin Hamilton, an organizer from Freedom For All Massachusetts, which works to protect transgender rights in our state. He was joined by Leo Austin-Spooner, a CRLS student and former RAUC student who is involved with activism in support of transgender rights.

Martin and Leo spoke about the current political climate surrounding these issues, their own activism, and ways that students can get involved. Following their visit, five GSA members volunteered at an evening phone banking event. They were trained in how to speak with strangers about transgender rights, and the five volunteers reported it was a positive learning experience!
