Cider Pressing

Garden News: Volunteer with your child's class to help press apple cider in the school garden!

During CitySprouts' Annual Cider Pressing we introduce children and teachers to the school garden by setting up an apple press and teaching kids how to make cider. We would love parent/guardian volunteers to help set up, do a little crowd control, and clean up afterwards. Come enjoy fresh cider and see how much the kids love being outside in the garden. We will press cider at Kennedy Longfellow on October 30, 31, and November 2.

If interested, contact Andrea Locke at [email protected] for more information.

Greeting from the Family Liaison
Fall is zipping by! Our kindergarteners have been apple picking, the 4th graders are well into their swimming unit for gym and we are almost to our second Community Playdate. We have a lot going for the rest of October: a Movie Night, Community School Halloween party and a Cradles to Crayons Kidpack sign-up at this month’s K-Lo Market. We are officially in full swing! We hope to see you for some or all of these events.

As always, if you have questions or concerns please feel to contact me at [email protected] or 617.349.4865.

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 | 6-7:30PM
Please join our friends in the Kennedy Community School for their annual HALLOWEEN Party! There will be gamesHalloween Party and crafts, a costume parade and entertainment from Malik the Magic Guy! The kids can show off their costumes and see all their school friends. It’s scheduled the day BEFORE Halloween so it doesn’t interfere with Trick or Treating.

Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week was October 15th – 19th! This is the first year Cambridge Public Schools participated, and we loved to show students there is ‘Lots 2 Love’ about school meals! 30 million students enjoy healthy lunches every school day in the U.S. We had lucky tray giveaways, cultural meals, and special guest servers that week. Students showed their love on Friday with a heart-colored or –themed shirt, and earned a fun sticker!

Counselor Tip
During our Parent Chat group a couple parents mentioned
that it would be helpful to learn some of the language and strategies that we use here at Kennedy-Longfellow for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). We teach kids self-regulation and social skills along with their academic learning. In each newsletter we are going to start having tips from one of our Social Workers, Rolanda Prophete and Natalie Lang. This
will help you use some of the same language and techniques that we use.

This quick tip is from Ms. Prophete:
There are so many strategies that we use to help kids practice belly breathing. Here is one that kids (especially younger ones enjoy.)

Smelling pizza: Have children stack their hands on top of each other. Imagine smelling fresh hot pizza that you are waiting to eat. Take a deep breath to smell the pizza and exhale by bringing your lips together to blow on the pizza to cool it off so that you may eat the pizza. Try this exercise
5 times.
